This weekend saw the Anchor Pub (Simon Thomas) hold a charity night for local primary schools ? Do you think these schools will ever see the money ?
Local trip advisor reports indicate the usual standard of reporting a vile landlord

I went there on Saturday. On the fence in the way in to the field with the cows in alongside the river he has mailed a sign in to the post saying NO PICNICS ALLOWED. What bloomin' right has he got to do this? I can have a picnic in a field by the river if I want! He doesn't bloody own the field or the river!

Very bad for cows to eat our litter. If he keeps the money, I don't think Sherlock will be disturbed. A rather risky public theft I would have thought. Especially as I bet he's hoofin loaded!

The owner of the field did not put up the sign the w***** from the Anchor put the sign up. He can stop you parking in his car park and then going for a picnic but he cannot stop you picnicking on the river bank. I would suggest that you park at Barcombe Mills and walk up along the riverbank. It is a lovely walk. The bloke is an absolute nightmare. I agree with Barcombe Resident - how much of that money will go to local schools - would be interesting to hear from the schools themselves.

Taking this opportunity to have a mini rant. Such a shame that pub is so horrendous - it's a great spot. The staff are surly and the food is awful. We love the boats but you just get the sense you are getting the pee taken out of paying for anything in that place.

Have a meal there and sit outside of an afternoon and prepare to have the owners rat of a dog begging for food and trying to fight your dog. If I owned the place I wouldn't let my dog do that. Meanwhile the owner is smoking a cigar wearing a cravat smirking

You are allowed to picnic on a footpath. The landlord of the pub has no right to say otherwise...

Anyone fancy a picnic this Saturday lunchtime.
Bring barbecues, picnic blankets, rubber dinghies, swimming trunks and whatever you want to eat and drink.

See you opposite the Anchor at 1:30

I'm going to stick to the facts here as I find so many comments on this site laughable, not only about this story but so many others. Vile, negativity written by spineless morons who hide behind a computer screen.
FACT. A lot of money was raised on Friday night despite the enormous outlay by the pub and hard work by management and staff who made the evening so much fun. Everybody is to be congratulated on their efforts. Barcombe Primary School will be coming down to the pub tomorrow as the first Primary School to collect their cheque from the money raised.
FACT. Yes Simon Thomas does not suffer fools. Liken it to someone driving onto your driveway and sitting down on your front lawn and having a picnic without asking your permission and then getting abuse hurled at you when told that the carpark and field are for patrons use. How would you react? We are a business open for half the year. All the fields around this area are owned by someone. The majority have animals grazing on them. They affect people's livelihoods and the death in animals when ingesting litter left behind by non thinking people. There is a perfectly good public carpark at Barcombe Mills where you can have picnics, put boats in the water without affecting businesses and animals alike. We are a busy quirky pub which may not appeal to everyone. If this is the case don't moan and go somewhere else. We all work very hard to give everyone of our customers a lovely day. The good comments always outweigh the bad. Please remember when you say your vicious hurtful things how you affect the family members. Maybe if you sat behind your computers and impacted the community in a positive way you would be happier people. Oh by the way my name is Kathy and I work here. If anyone would like to come down and talk to me about anything that is causing them grief in regards to Simon or the pub please see me. I would be happy to chat with you.

You are missing the point. If I choose to sit on the opposite riverbank from the pub and eat a sandwich I will. People should not be intimidated by the pub landlord who has no right to ban picnics on a public footpath or shout at people for doing so. He us in the wrong legally and morally.

Simon Thomas could not have a civil conversation with anybody - he is a bully and a coward. He certainly does not care about the impact some of his actions have on people believe me I know people who could tell you first hand. He has no rights over the riverbank or the river and he cannot tell people who legitimately walk on the footpath what they can do. I understand that he can stop people parking in his car park and then going for a picnic but other that that he has no right to hurl abuse at people who are legally using a right of way. The man is a jumped up twit. If he has raised money for charity then good for him but you can bet your life he will never do something for nothing.

Agreed. I think a mass picnic is in order. Film any abuse and report. Landlord needs to remember the law and rights of way.

Yes, absolutely! A mass picnic and then film him on our phones if/when he starts the abuse! Good idea. Or perhaps it would be better to all make a point of individually going for picnics on the riverbank opposite the pub, lots of different picnics over a period of time, and all film him when he starts getting fired up. Then all submit the films to the police.
