Has anyone else noticed the poor service and lack of open checkouts at Tesco's in Lewes.
Went in there today to shop and in addition to the usual 'out of stocks' or stock on the floor there were only 2 checkouts open for trolleys. I do not want to use the self service checkouts so had to wait in a very long queue.
When asked where all the staff were, I was told that their times had been changed to enable them to be there when needed??????
Needless to say I'll be shopping elsewhere in the future where they recognise the customers needs and are able to provide a service to cater for them!

Customer service in Tescos has always been, at best, apathetic. Their self service checkouts are so slooooow you loose the will to live - on the upside their booze is cheap

We agree. The Old Mayoress has decided she can barely go in there anymore ! Apparently, it's all own brands, out of stock and extremely apathetic service too ! And now Waitrose is as cheap as Tesco, or put another way Tesco is as expensive as Waitrose, but Waitrose's shopping experience is far, far better !

complete bull. All of it. Tesco is the best supermarket in town by light years. Waitrose? PAH overpriced and overrated. Aldi? oh dear oh dear oh dear

I always use the scan as you shop in Tescos, never a queue even last christmas. The queues in Waitrose always seem horrendous but again I use the scan as you go.

I use the scanner in Tescos - you can go in for just a couple of things and be out again in ten minutes.
Please do go on knocking Aldi; maybe people will stop discovering it. It's got so popular that it's now impossible to park, although they're incredibly quick on the check outs and the value is amazing.

Shhhh, Sjep76 and S Queen! Keep the secret of hand-scanner shopping. Hello folks, it's a terrible idea. Why scan as you shop when you can enjoy the social life in a queue on a Christmas Saturday.....

Aldi anytime- the best value for snacks to nibble on while watching documetaries or composing replies to SQ and other intelligent posters. Like brands, but cheaper.
There are a few exceptions, but we all learn from experience. I can recommend the chocolate and nut area; also the Cote-du-Rhone and house gin.
The checkout queue may seem long: but it moves quick. Have cash ready, and take you own bag. ( a plastic one;not the mrs.)

I sometimes go in there late in the evening and there is one checkout young woman/girl who is the bubbliest, happiest most engaging checkout person I've ever come across, she makes the whole Tescos experience so much better.
She needs promoting.

Sadly they haven't risen to the challenge of having Aldi on their door-step. Consider this about Tesco, they call a range of products 'Finest'. It's a smug assumption and if you've had the mis-fortune to sample something from this product range you'll know exactly what Tesco think of their customers. Like other posters have suggested, we've now got a better choice in Lewes with the introduction of Aldi and it really does have some great value for money lines.

No no no . Don't go to Aldi. Stay in Tesco and be ripped off. Leave Aldi for those who like uncrowded aisles and good value fresh meat and veg.

I stopped shopping in Tesco's years ago, apart from going there to buy the healthy stuff like... Tobacco.
The rest of the shop is a rip off from start to finish.. If its not the out of date packs of food its the 'Fresh Veg' that is blown some sort of genetically engineered air to make the 'Veg' look edible.
It actually wilts before you can get it to the checkout. Its as if veg area has its own Tesco Bio System.
Waitrose is catching up. Selling cakes and milk etc that have a day to go before they're out of date. Green Banana's that magically turn into mush with no in between.. The list can go on....
Aldi.. I go for milk and biscuits!
Not much of a diet...

Damn. That explains a lot: it is now quite impossible to park there. It would help if Which? would stop listing half their stock as Best Buys as well...

The first word that comes to mind now when I think of Tescos is 'dishonest'. Fake two-for-one offers, fake cheap wine deals, deliberately confusing pricing on veg that makes it impossible to work of which is cheapest (try the onions), fruit that goes from unripe to rotten in half a day (try melons and advocados), meat of such low quality and poor taste it beggars belief (chicken and bacon that has been injected with water and salts, meat that isn't of the animal its supposed to be etc). What's more Tescos is not cheap. Even much of Waitrose's stuff is cheaper than Tescos'. Have you seen Aldi's wine too? Half the price.
I use both Waitrose and Aldi now. As I result I get fresher food at honest prices [and spend a lot less time getting annoyed at having to buy two items when I only want one].

I have been using Aldi for about a year and most of their prices have stayed the same unlike Tesco's prices that change every week. Aldi is great.

We use a mix of Aldi and Waitrose mostly. I wish Aldi would sell fruit and veg loose, most of the pre-packs are too big for just the two of us. Aldi chocolate, biscuits and tinned soups are fab, their free range chickens excellent value and anything that is in packaging very similar to a brand is normally at least as nice as the branded item. The exception to this is their pseudo-Lurpak, which is like wax and should with consistency of hair grease and should come with a health warning.
We still go to Tesco for 3 things - bread (the "baked" on the premises stuff is pretty reasonable), Cravendale milk, which seems to be permanently on special, and the aforementioned Lurpak, which Waitrose only sell in small packets.
We park in Tesco, down near the bridge, and walk to the other two. It's so handy, having their car park almost equidistant between 2 decent supermarkets...

What a load of rubbish, Tesco is perfectly fine if you pick and choose what you want to buy, for example their Organic range is a lot cheaper than Waitrose and their Everyday Value is very good for store cupboard basics but not so good for other things e.g. breakfast cereal that tastes like hamster food! Waitrose brand match prices so you won’t pay anymore than anywhere else and yes their meat and poultry is more expensive but you pay for what you get!! If you don’t want to buy meat that is injected with salt and water then don’t buy it from Tesco, ditto Asda! Aldi is good for certain bits like fruit & veg and snacks but their cheese is awful, and meat not a lot better. It’s like people who shop at the Pound Shop who think they’re getting amazing value for money but a lot of the time you’re getting ripped off! It’s more about being a savvy shopper and getting bits from each store, no one store is any better than the other.

Lewes Mole has it spot on. There's nothing much between the major supermarkets and, generally speaking, you get what you pay for. I shop in Asda, Tesco, Lidl and Aldi as each have things I like. But I have had some awful things from all 4 too.
Aldi and Lidl checkout queues can be a pain, and often there is a price anomaly that has to be checked manually thereby holding the queue up. But it's only a minor quibble.
