House tagged for burglary?

Looks like we have had our house tagged for a possible burglary/theft. A yellow paint circle has appeared on the pavement at the top of our drive by the water meter. Have contacted services and discovered that the water companies will only use blue markings and Gas companies use yellow. Gas and water companies know nothing of any reason for this mark so we can only assume it's for something else. Police have been informed. Has anyone else found such markings in the Lewes area?

Is the pavement there in good condition? Yellow circles are often used to mark repair sites

It a perfectly good dropped kerb. No repairs needed. No marks anywhere else in the road either. There really is no explanation for it other than a tag.

Any burgular with an ounce of common sense is not going to risk been seen "tagging" you with paint when they could just make a mental note of the house number or other identifying feature!
someone could be marking a "route", private survey company, a distance marker to name just a few examples.
Don't panic and jump to conclusions.......

@Guido - I think you're being a bit paranoid. There are so many subcontractors out there, it's quite possibly that a large company doesn't know it's arse from its elbow. I know that tramps used to leave marks for other gentlemen of the road, pointing out a house with a kind owner, but I don't think burglars go around spraying yellow circles next to water mains. If I were you, I'd be asking myself why I was so worried and how rational it was. Have you come from London, where the crime rate is much higher?

Earl- do you have a problem with London people, you continually post derogatory comments about ordinary people who go about their normal lives and probably want to live in Lewes. Ask yourself this question - 'why am I so chippy ?'
Guido - don't worry somebody tagged my house and I haven't been burgled yet - fingers crossed.

Tagging of houses does happen and is a well known method done by a certain section of the community. Different symbols denote different meanings such as 'this house has valuable items and worth robbing' or ' nothing of any worth in here' 'risky' 'wealthy' 'already burgled' 'vulnerable people' 'occupants afraid' 'alarmed house' etc etc. Most symbols are in chalk and on gate post or walls. From what you have described it's probably maintenance related. The symbols can be easily found in a Google search and you can cross reference yours. Relax !

Blimey Dad with loads of kids - you know a lot about burglary don't you?! Are you an ex convict?
Guido - that's what you get for living in a town that contains a prison I'm afraid! Did you not think of that before you moved to Lewes?!? Ha Ha!
Just stay in all the time for a month or so, they'll soon get bored waiting for you to go out and move on to another house.
