Reading these comments it looks like the education system is in an even worse state than we thought. Over a century of free education and we're still turning out semi-literates.

I`m appalled @ some of the sentiments expressed on this thread . I`m glad I don`t live in Lewes . I`ve been in Sussex all my life and Hailsham for over 30 years. There has been several traditional traveller funerals in the town , and they all get the respect they deserve here.

I agree Plumber. This thread and the prejudice shown by so many is possibly the most depressing thread I've seen on the Lewes forum. 70% racist ignorant misinformed bile, mostly directed at someone who's grieving the death of a family member. Genuinely unbelievable.

If I was you Julie I would not read anymore of these immature threads, all it will do is upset you and its what the morons want. have a happy life and grieve in peace its what your Uncle would wish for you.

I find it very sad that a families tribute to a family member ,has been the cause of so much friction. so what if the town was blocked up for a while, this was a tradition funeral for the person in question and as such should be respected. if people have an issue with members of a family, then there are better times to express this. my thoughts go out to the Harris family and any family who have lost someone

Lewes town centre was not built to accommodate cars, buses and lorries. They came along later, together with their impatient occupants.
Thus if anyone wants to bury a loved one, light a blue touch paper, wave some bells at a flowery garland, rejoice in the imminent move to Priory School, purvey some Christmas baubles or re-enact an ancient battle, then the High Street needs to close for a little while.
Personally I have no problem with this, provided notice has been given. Vehicles can avail themselves of the Cuilfail Tunnel and B&H bus passengers can use their tickets on Southern Trains.
I can't help wondering whether on the occasion of Uncle Harris' marvellous sounding send off, this notice was given, as the bus companies, police and town in general, and this forum in particular, seem to have been caught off guard.
If notice was given, then it doesn't appear to have filtered through as Brighton & Hove Buses are normally very efficient at warning passengers when a closure is due.
If word were not put out in advance, then I feel that would be a failing on the part of the undertakers rather than the Harris family, who had plenty else to think about.
Julie, I'm glad your uncle had the funeral he wished for. Please don't get involved in any more slanging matches. Instead, take the time to enjoy your grief.
With best wishes to you and your family.

Trolls get everywhere. They post something utterly outrageous and then sit back to enjoy the perverse pleasure they get from the fallout. The best advice is to ignore them as a reaction is what they want. The problem with a non-registation forum like this is that one troll using multiple names can appear to be a large group.
