Very, very difficult to answer. I walk at least twice a week between Lewes and Newhaven and it is never consistent. It usually takes me 2 hours and sometimes it can be nearly high water at Lewes yet low water at Newhaven and vice versa. Whoever it is who organises the raft race seems to have a pretty good idea though - they always seem to start at the advertised time at high water.

Hi Tim, Genuine enquiry, only I knew a Tim that was in the foreign Legion and he used the forum so I thought you might be him. Loved your reply " Well if you did join" it made me laugh.

It's a pretty consistent 1 hour after Newhaven. Don't forget that most tide tables are in GMT year-round, so in the summer Lewes is 2hrs behind the table time for Nehaven.

It depends on the water level and height of the tide but generally it starts coming in at Lewes about an hour before high tide at Newhaven and starts going out about 1 and a half hours after high tide at Newhaven.

The BBC Weather page has a tide timetable but it only covers Newhaven for your purposes.
I did find this for you though,
High tide at Lewes is usually an hour later than for Newhaven depending on water flow and volume of water.

Can anyone confirm that Piddinghoe is 40 mins after high tide at Newhaven? Great place to swim!
