We were down in Lewes for the Stopover Weekend and had a fantastic time. The people of Lewes were very friendly even with 25000 extra people invading their town. Big thanks to the Spring Barn camp site who did a good job. It was good to see so many local businesses doing well from this weekend. Hopefully it is a yearly event! Regards John

John you are not a Lewes resident? I am and I did feel invaded. I hope this does not become a regular event, if it does then maybe it should be held in spring barn farm, they can make even more money then. I feel quite sorry for St Michaels cricket club too , they usually play on the convent field. nobody seems to have mentioned this.

I think most Lewes residents were very happy with how the weekend went. What an amazing atmosphere in the town! Let's hope this is a regular thing.

I admit I was sceptical right up to the last minute about this event but I am pleased to say I thought it was a great success. The town actually had some life to it and hopefully a few returning visitors.
I was in the town centre on Saturday lunchtime and was pleased to see happy people enjoying themselves. I haven't heard of any trouble that occured.
I worked at the gig on Saturday night and everybody was happy and friendly. I was walking home just after midnight on my own and all I saw was people having a good time.
Maybe people were slightly inconvienienced by it all but looking at the big picture it was a great event for most of the town.

When you think of the amount of visitors Brugges has each year, of all ages. I know it's much larger than Lewes, but it's a medieval town none the less ,full of history. I'm am sure Lewes planners could take a few notes from them. Take us into the 21st century, without destroying our heritage. Of course, England has its own historical gems too that cope with far more visitors than we do !

Lewes Resident: did you actually leave your house and see what was going on in town, and how much people were enjoying themselves? or did you stay at home with your pre-conceived idea that it was going to be a total disaster, my town too!
I have been a Lewes resident all my life, and it was great to see this finally happening here. Hope to see something like this again soon.

Glad you had a good time John. Everybody I've spoken to thought it was great too. The only negativity I've heard has been on here.
Thanks to you and the majority of other visitors who respected our town and spent money in our shops!

Thanks for posting John. Glad you had a good time. Any initial misgivings I had quickly disappeared and I too hope this becomes a regular fixture. Incidentally, I live in Malling and have resided in Lewes for the last 29 years, so consider myself a native.

you cannot possibly compare Lewes to Brugges completely different.

@Lewes Resident. Perhaps My Town was exaggerating slightly when (s)he said 99% were in favour. But as I write this, 20 out of 22 people have given your post a thumbs down, and that offers a poll of some kind. According to Excel, 20 out of 22 is 90.9091% in favour. Let's call it 91%.

I certainly didnt Love it. However that was more to the Band than the idea, (and I didnt actually go to it). So long as the council are making a nice bunce from it so that council tax doesnt have to go up long may they continue. Maybe we can get decent band next year though.

cliff hanger yes I can see that you are absolutely right. I am quite new to this forum and realise it isn't my "bag" as they say. I don't fit in to this sort of group , I realise that now , it is of a type and I am not of that type.

I am not sure what you mean by that Lewes Resident, assuming that was you posting and not some imposter. I don't think there is a type who posts here. It attracts a fairly broad cross section of Lewes people, I would say. I must confess I was wary about the whole GOTR thing, and did not go myself. Mainly because it was not my kind of music.
Living near the centre of town, I was woken up a few times last night. But I can cope with that as a one off. I thought the atmosphere in Lewes yesterday was fantastic. So many people enjoying themselves, and hopefully spending money here. If it does happen next year, and has music more to my taste, then I will do my best to get a ticket.

Really impressed with the whole weekend really, and like others, not knowing what to expect. Without being a massive fan of the band, I really enjoyed the other acts and being at a festival in the town I live in, equally, seeing visitors enjoy it too! Also really loved all the other little events going on around the town. Great to see the Grange looking so vibrant and I poked my head round Harveys yard to see the cutest little tea dance going on! Also getting Starfish, the next generation of musicians involved too! Reckon there really was something happening for everyone - bloomin' good show!

I didn't go , but that was my choice , it was fantastic to see Lewes full of happy people enjoying themselves , we weren't one of the businesses that benefited from the weekend but who cares it was one weekend out of 52 and for once Lewes was alive . Oh dear it seems that maybe just maybe Lewes took its blinkers off , whatever next !

I didn't like any of the bands so I stayed away as did other Lewes residents who felt the same.
It was only a couple of nights of noise and drunk people I had to put up with.
I just hope that all the people who dislike about bonfire remember and act the same as me for Bonfire.

I had reservations even though I was helping to work the "Bonfire United Bar" which was total madness from start to finish, but it has brought much needed funds into all off the Lewes Bonfire Societies, the town itself benefited no end and it is now firmly on the Music Festival Map. Watch this space for next year!
So It Is A Big YES From Me
