Sometimes you have to look beyond the spin. Osborne's 'charter' is a trick. It makes a mockery of serious economics and the public intelligence. It's just a set piece designed to trap the opposition and to form an excuse for Osborne to keep on making his ideologically driven cuts.
But there is danger. It could force a future government to keep on making those cuts despite the impact they may have on public services and families . It could also stop a future government from investing in housing or infrastructure even when investment was needed to foster economic growth.
Of course the deficit needs to be reduced- but not on the back of the most vulnerable or at the cost of public services.
I'm fed up with being the recipient of expensive skillfully manipulated spin. When the dark arts are used so cynically we are all in trouble.

John McDonnell’s interview in the Observer, said: “We will support the charter. We will support the charter on the basis we are going to want to balance the books, we do want to live within our means and we will tackle the deficit.”

Um that was two weeks ago ……. Eh ?

It is true that in only 8 years of the last 60 years have we run an absolute surplus although this is rather misleading given the long recovery from the war and the successive economic calamities we have endured .
A more sensible view is that there is structural weakness to our Nations economy which is that we have a very centralised and unaccountable state with weak checks and balances . This “elected dictatorship” may call on funds from non voters ( the yet to be born and yet to vote ) at any time and it is resoundingly obvious that we have suffered badly as result.
Most people understand that leave politicians in charge of unlimited borrowing is like leaving dogs in charge of sausages and any check to this is long overdue.

We are currently looking at a deficit of £75bn and a National debt over 70% so pretending the New Labour got the sums right is like pretending the sun has not come up . There it is , up there in the sky , see it …good !

So Labour have now added to their plan to ”Print money” to fund spending …(Jesus Christ !!! ) with a refusal to back plans to reform our addiction to borrowing two weeks after endorsing it.
As I am no doubt a Fascist Nazi Tory Kipper who hates poor people or something can we look at a spectrum of opinion ?
What do they think : Jeremy Warner Centrist Keynesian – Critical of the blunt instrument of the act but “ ………one thing is for sure: McDonnell will never be convinced of it. Whether it be the rich or the debt markets, for him there will always be a magic money tree.”
Dan Hodges – New Labour ( I think a tad irritated ) “…….The man is not a dangerous Left-wing ideologue, he is a clown. Actually, he’s both. He’s a dangerous Left-wing ideological clown. He should turn up to his first session of Treasury questions with a false nose, make-up, and giant floppy red feet. Then he should change his name from John McDonnell to Ronald McDonnell……”
In the Guardian New Statesman Speccie and Times there are reports that the Parliamentary Labour Party were literally screaming with rage at this incompetence and there is now a stand off between Corbyns youthful attack dogs who are “Momentum” and the elected Party with the threat of de-selection hanging over any rebels
I have never never seen anything like it . This Act does need work although it is fundamentally sound and necessary adjustment and this is exactly where we need a decent and intelligent opposition. Sadly we do not have one and this view is shared by just about every elected member of the Labour Party.
Its just tragic .
