Then you might want to try Peacehaven or Eastbourne. You're not going to find anything bigger than one bedroom for that kind of money in Lewes and even that would be very small, unfurnished and not including bills.
The further east you go, the cheaper housing gets and being away from a mainline train station helps too. Hailsham might have somewhere big enough for three people £500 a month.

Looking For A Hole.
Please help if you can. I want a hole in the ground. For personal reasons I can't go into. About 8ftx5ft must be airy as I can get claustrophobic.

3 members in your family? Presumably wife and child so 2 bedroomed property required?
The rental prices are relatively high in Lewes and as housing benefit pays £775 per month to people on benefits (plus council tax) it is unlikely you will find anything to rent in Lewes below that amount in the private sector.
Good luck

Remind me again why I bother working for a living?

Because you have self respect maybe Ed Can Do? I fear the sum mentioned is probably right as Nic O"Lass has pointed out.

I don't think Ive seen a 2 bed for less than £800.
Sometimes people share and use the living room as a bedroom but even so, a 1 bed would probably be 650 plus?

Ed Can Do and Nic O'Lass - if you were to be unfortunate enough to lose your job - and you've seen unemployment is going up - wouldn't you hope the system would at lerast help you hang on to where you live so you can at least given an address when you apply for another job? Or do you think an employer would be impressed by an application from a homeless person whose children were in care?

Like Rozzer I have no problem with people getting help. I do have a problem with shirkers though! I do not believe it is quite so easy to rook the system as people think. I Have sympathy for those in genuine difficulties through no fault of their own, particularly the young people looking for a home.

I think housing benefit for a single person is £500 to 600 if your lucky. I wouldn't say the majority of housing benefit claimants are scroungers. I would like to see who the nasty people that post on here turn too in hard times.
They would say "ooh I've paid my taxes, just claiming what I'm entitled too".
Why not think before opening your mouth, let alone post your drivel on a message board.
