This has to be a wind up. Why would anyone want to produce, let alone use a Lewes currency? Can give me any justification, valid reasons or benefits as to why this is a good idea compared opposed to using "real money"?

no its not a wind up there was a bit on the news last week

Helping local shops? So would that mean that you could not use your Lewes Groat anywhere but Lewes? Sounds like a bad idea to me, unless you get more for your money in the local shops, but who would sussidise for that, the proprietor? and would outsiders with normal money be charged more? I am all for supporting local business but I can do that with pounds sterling.
This just strikes me as some people wanting to do something good but not really thinking it through.
It could become almost as farcical as the NIMBYS throwing their toys out their prams at the thought of a MacDonalds or Burger King coming to Lewes and citing the increase of capitalism and consumer greed for ruining locally business then welcoming Costa & Cafe Nero with open arms.

that why it will not work. people shop out of lewes more now

We're agreed then! Everyone ignore the gimmick of the Lewes currency and show your support by actually using the shops.
Although saying that people will travel for better choice and price, so maybe they need an incentive to use local shops.
Maybe the shop keepers should offer more diversity of product if they want to make more money. After all I assmue that the whole Lewes Groat idea is designed around shop keepers earning a few bob more.

It's own currency!? Being 'not from around here' we often joke about having to get our passports ready when we enter planet Lewes. The town is already cut-off from reality enough without it going any further. As a local business we obviously support anything which increases local trade but with the green/transition people urging everyone in Lewes to buy less what hope is there?
Lewes is the architect of its own downfall.

Why not go all the way and make gold/silver coins. Very hard to forge, and the Lewes pound would even hold it's value over the British Pound or Euro. The effect of inflation is rising prices, the cause of inflation is the ability of central banks to create as much money as they see fit out of thin air. Make a real statement, make a real difference and tie your "currency" to something of value!

I think its a really good idea. Our life style is destroying the planet and causing poverty in third world countries so we need to rethink everthing.
Who know where it will lead but one thing is for sure we cannot continue as we have in the past so we need to find new ways of doing things.
With repsect the people on this thread who are against this are still wedded to the old ways of doing things

I like the idea of the Lewes pound but just don't think there are enough "ordinary" shops in Lewes to make it viable. I have to go into Brighton for most of my shopping.
