Is anyone in South Chailey getting a bad Internet connection from Talktalk? I rang them last week and they ran some remote tests saying that the 'signal keeps dropping in and out'(I could have told them that!) They will come out to check the line on 30th(!!!) Jan,but if the problem is with our equipment there is a charge of £50! Is there anything I can do to check the line (they suggested trying a different router but obviously most people don't have a spare one!) Please before all the experts on here start having a dig....I am not an expert on how these things work so any advice would be welcome!

Try connecting the router to the pc with a cable. I am assuming you are set up as wireless? If the problem disappears then it could well be the router, but not definatley. You could also switch off the router, then switch it on again to reset it.
I am no expert either but these are basic operations I would perform. PS. If you contact talktalk by phone out of office hours you will get through to the Phillipines who cannot do much other than report it back to UK!

Could you explain what you mean by a 'bad internet connection'? Is it just slow or does it keep disconnecting? Is it both of those or something different?
I'm in South Chailey and connect to the Plumpton telephone exchange. Apart from the occasional disconnection due to power cuts, work at the exchange or a 'noisy' line, my connection is as stable and fast - twice BT's estimate - as I could hope given my distance from the exchange.
If, like me, you connect to the Plumpton exchange - phone number 01273 89xxxx - I suspect that Talk Talk have arranged for BT to visit you as the line/connection is BT's rather than Talk Talk's responsibilty.
One word of warning... If your modem/router is turned on and off frequently (deliberately or otherwise) this can lead software at the telephone exchange to interpret that as an unstable connection and reduce your connection speed temporarily - this can take up to 10 days of a stable connection to clear. Google "IP Profile" for more information.

Really?? This happens if you turn your router on and off frequently?
I turn my router off every night and if I go out during the day....
I am a bit anal with my leccy at the moment andf turn off everytrhing if I am not using it. I turn my microwave off between usages...My cooker too. And my telly and freeview box both get turned off at the wall every night.
Standbys also use leccy (apparently)
I thought by turning your router off you would be prolonging its life.
I am prepared to be corrected.....

Very interesting is this.....
I have had the internet for about 5 years and had a replacement router about 18 months ago.
As my original router was playing up (according to Talk Talk) they offered me a new wireless router free as long as I opened another 6 month contract.
That's when I thought turning ot off at night would be a good idea as the old router had obviously worn out.
The first 4 years I never turned it off so I am assuming that my IP profile is correct.

A router is a small electronic circuit with no moving parts to wear out. If left on I see no reason why it should not last for a lifetime. The power consumption is 12watts, or about 2 units per week. Like the freewiew box, it is best left on permanently.

taff........I have just tried the laptop connected directly to the router and it works ok.
Rutilus......the Internet actually goes off completely for periods of time, and when it is working it's soooo slow! We have a Linksys router which I was told was a good one and it's only about a year old.
Unfortunately our phone number is an 01273 40**** which I believe is from the Barcombe exchange. They apparently have no plans to upgrade the exchange there, although I have been told it needs to be!
