There isn't anywhere really.
Lots of places that think they are but here's a few a cut above IMO
Magazine - good food - slightly pricey - limited menu - very pleasant place and staff
Snowdrop - lots of people like it but I don't. The majority must win so try it
Royal Oak Barcombe - good honest pub food at decent prices - nice atmosphere and pleasant service - not gourmet if that's what you want
Pelham Arms - Pretty good, nice food, nice service, nice pub
Ask/Prezzo OK if you want ordinary pasta you could do better at home and Famiglia marginally better though I shan't be going in there again
The Wok Inn on the Broyle - as good Chinese food as you will get most places in my view but it's not cheap. Meal for two with minimum drinks £50
Indian food in Lewes - in my view every one of them poor but nowhere near as bad as the Thai restaurant

The hearth is great for pizza, excellent in fact, and very family friendly.
The lime tree is a pretty good neighbourhood restaurant.
For pub food, the kings head, swan, snowdrop, lewes arms.

Why Lewes? The carvery at Peacehaven serves good food also The Harvester at Polegate is good especially the fish & chips. But the one to beat is The Green Man at Ringmer, try their Bacon & onion roll, done in a cloth just like Mother makes. Mind you the servings are very large.

There is no longer a 'good' restaurant in lewes imho. Plenty of average and even plenty of 'above average'.
The lime tree kitchen does have an amazing rep but I haven't been there yet, it is closed whenever I want to go!
I mourn the demise of Thackerays.
