Does anyone know which fun fairs came to lewes during the 1930s and where they held them. Curious to know which fair family came to town during this period. I gather there where four families operating in the southern counties.

Harris Bros Funfairs from Ashington were around at that time.
I only remember the fairs from the early 60s that were on the land opposite Eddies Cafe where The Gallops is now. Can't remember the names though.

Thanks, just trying to put in place the bits of a story of how grandparents met, they no longer around to ask and neither are my parents, so just down to detective work!

I imagine these events require some sort of permission. Council archive? There's one in Lewes I heard but don't know where.

I'd start at the Lewes reference library. They've got a large collection of material on Sussex there. Ask a librarian - they usually get really interested in enquiries like this.

Good info folks, didnt know that coles and stevens ran fairs for this area, that makes 6. Will try reeves and public records and library. Have email some of the historic and gouverning bodies for fun fairs in the hope that they may have some info. Sort of hope it maybe Harris as we still see them around with some of the original rides and they are always willing to have a chat and share history with us.

The fair that used to be on the Gallops during the 60's and 70's was Coles.
