Why is this a discussion issue? Food banks are there for a reason, if you don't like them, get over it and move on.

As it said on the front page of a national newspaper today - we’re the 5th richest nation in the world yet we have hundreds of thousands of people using food banks, and hundreds of thousands living in poverty. Yeah, what a great society.

I think they are terrible. What has happened to the country that people on low wages and/or benefits can’t afford food? Bloody disgrace. Minimum wage and benefits need should be increased, high earners need to be taxed at a higher rate.

Bodger your right, i heard someone say last week, if we tax the rich they will leave, but if they dont pay taxes then why keep them? because their not putting anything back now are they, the real benefit frauds are committed by the ones up the top,

Basically it's IQ. If your IQ is below 95y you will find it hard to balance a budget and deal with credit cards. Impulsive behavior needs to be countered by self discipline, not easy to acquire for any of us. Banks are guilty of reckless lending to those who have no business borrowing money. It's no surprise they end up in trouble. Hyper individualism has its victims.

I think a full working week, seems to interfere with folks lifestyle these days ! You can have more than one job, even if it means working every day. Reliability, appearance, attitude, cleanliness, even keenness, all very rare qualities these days, believe it. Seems normal to working people I know, so you'll scoff, try spending your life interviewing people, alledgedly desperate for work. It will open your eyes.

Because cheap food is invariably poor quality and stuffed with fat sugar and salt to make it taste of something. See McDonalds or Subway for example. Add to that limited education or interest in things other than survival and it’s clear why it can cause obesity

Yes we're the 5th richest nation but so spectacularly selfish that we refuse to pay sufficient taxes to pay for even the most basic public services. It's very easy to blame the politicians (and they certainly deserve a degree of blame) and yet it's the general public's refusal to pay what's required that's creating such inequality.

This thread provides excellent evidence for why residents associations and councillors should not run food banks.
Enough small minded idiots start sticking their oar in and they will get nervous and start questioning whether they should continue.
The ONLY thing that should ever shut down a food bank is a lack of referrals.

I attended the food bank for the first half of this year. I used to go at the end of the session and was given extra vegetables that other people had refused to take. I will always be extremely grateful for the help provided at a very difficult time. I'm not on Facebook so am unaware of the negative comments made there.

The government is basically getting ordinary people to cover the deficit. Other low/medium earners who do a weekly shop in Tesco etc who donate to the food banks out of kindness when they might not have that much to spare themselves, meanwhile at the top of the pile.....
As much money as ever is being made in the city and the west end, low taxes on the wealthiest and legal tax loopholes keep it from being distributed. It’s not austerity Britain for everyone and it doesn’t need to be for the most vulnerable either.

It is appalling how the existence of food banks has been normalised - right down to Sainsburys giving handy hints to shoppers in their stores about what is suitable to donate from their shelves. And was it Rees Mogg who thought how delightful it was for people to have an opportunity to be charitable? Food banks strip people of dignity. It is unspeakable that a rich country such as ours refuses to feed its people. The inequality in our country has increased under the trick of 'austerity'. It has been a deliberate ploy to reduce the state, sell off our assets and increase the wealth of the actually small in number of the ultra rich. Pursuing this has been energetically continued during the ongoing distraction of 'Brexit'. The wealth and influence of the lightly taxed 'filthy rich' meanwhile has scuppered any possibility of a solution to that conundrum that could have benefited ordinary people.

A food bank closing due to a genuine lack of referrals would be a wonderful thing.
In the meantime, they are essential if people without enough money are to not just eat, but eat healthily.
Please support Lewes food banks in any way you can.

There has always been 'poor people' under achievers, whatever you like to call them. What has happened now with population growth is they are much more noticeable, because there is more of everybody and a much more advanced news network.

What is happening now is that the most vulnerable in society are having their support withdrawn. There will always be those in need of help short term or long term.
Assistance provided quickly and effectively will get most people back on their feet again, don’t provide support and they risk falling in to the long term category.
There will always be those for various mental, physical or social reasons are unable to support themselves and their families properly. They still deserve a basic standard of living and a fair, accessible benefit system. Despite what certain news sites make you think, they are a small minority.

There are lots of ways of ending up needing to use a food bank, but the commonest is DWP maladministration. Evidently ill people are assessed by the DWP contractor companies, and told they are fit to work, and their benefits cancelled. This is usually wrong, but the appeal system takes up to a year to resolve it, and in the meantime you have no, or much too little, money. Most people win their appeals, when they eventually happen, and get a back payment.
Alternately you can quite easily get sanctioned and your benefits withdrawn. This is especially easy if you suffer from something like depression, and some days just can't do anything.
Some people have normal lives, but get a sudden, unexpected, expense, eg your boiler or the car your job depends on goes and you have no money to replace it. If you have access to credit you borrow: if you can't you pay, and have nothing left to feed your family, or the electricity meter.
Some people arrive at the food bank in nice clothes and a smart car. They still need help. Usually they were doing well, and spending all they earned, and had maybe taken out loans they were confident they could repay, when they were struck by redundancy or ill health. Your income can collapse a lot faster than your commitments, like mortgages and loan repayments. Quite a few people who never ever thought they would need them suddenly find they are very glad they exist.

Thankyou to all the small minded idiots for helping to justify the removal of control of one Lewes food bank from effective local authority control.

This is actually a great idea and thanks to this you can feed a lot of homeless people. A couple of years ago I wanted to organize such a bank, but I could not get permission from the state. I found a great place, paid the rent, and bought about 5 food display fridges. In the end, it looked like a cool cafe, but the authorities refused to give me permission and then I had to forget about it. In addition, I spent more than $ 55,000 on this idea. It is a pity that I could not achieve my goal (
