We will remain part of Europe regardless of whether we're part of the EU. The EU is not Europe.

@The Greek: not much longer. The EU negotiators are aiming to block that option early on. So that Theresa the Appeaser can't pull out and then evoke again, to gain more negotiation time. Fun times.

Of course we can, Tom. Europe is a continent, of which we are a part. The EU, on the other hand, is a temporary arrangement that is rapidly unravelling, largely because of the idiocy of the Euro.

I would like to be part of a European union, but not THE European Union, as it is. I had hoped that Brexit might prompt the beginnings of a reformation in Brussels, but the EU is becoming even more entrenched and sadly, Theresa May and co aren't showing any signs of wisdom with their terrible negotiating tactics. We're all doomed.

@ Clifford, although with continental drift, we may not always be part of Europe

As for the apparent collapse of the European Union itself, I'm not so sure, since elections in Austria, Netherlands and now potentially France buck the trend that we started here in the UK. We always saw ourselves as outsiders anyway, with a british exceptionalism mentality (in a significant percentage of our population). I hope these people are right, and that we can do without the pretty positive trading arrangements and partnership we had with our geographical neighbours and friends, or what replaces it somehow plugs (some of) the void that is a genuine threat to our living standards. We certainly can't rely on the commonwealth - this is not a viable strategy, since we already have pretty optimal trade with many of these countries through being the EU. The "British Empire" is gone (you could argue as late as 1997 with Hong Kong, but in all probability decades earlier), in case anyone had forgotten. Lets also remind ourselves that Gibraltar, the last "jewel in the crown", sheep colonies aside, voted 97% to remain in the new EU empire!
