I remember it well. It would give the DFL's palpatations if it was still there now. Remember the tills and how your change came down those shoots into a tray thing. Those were the days when you could buy useful things in the town.

You didn't remember it that well dimbo 'cause it wasn't in the Cliffe. Cliffe starts at the bridge, the precinct is in the High Street.

Well that is so clever of you. I am so pleased you pointed out what someone else actually said. By the way, the precinct wasn't there then so wasn't in the High Street.

FA that butchers was Leesons where Monsoon is now.Where Abbey National is now was Marsh the butchers. As you went in the door there was a large opening down into the cellar.Sometimes this was open as the butcher brought up meat etc.Death trap for the careless!Next to the Rainbow was a chemist.Next to that, Clarks the bakers. On that same side was a green grocers.Talking of The rainbow, years ago(70s) it was a very decent pub with an area out back for eating. On the other side two shops before the Brewers was a very handy shop, selling hardware etc.Lots more I remember.

I can definately remember Timothy Whites being near to where the Abbey national is circa early 70's.
Fur feathers and fins used to be Gamleys with a big glass fronted counter which housed all sorts of goodies....again circa early 70's
One thing i remember is walking up North Street with my mum before i started school (1970) and just seeing the tips of those Leylandii conifers in the grounds of those offices which are surrounded by the white railings. I think there might still be one left but they grew so tall and had to come out some years ago.

And the Court Lounge, opposite the court, where the framing shop is now.
There was a ballroom at the back with a big ball thing hanging from the ceiling. My Mum says during the war it was a dance hall called the Crystal Ballroom...

The Court Lounge was owned and run by Pat (Irish with a wicked sense of humour)and her husband Andre (Greek, keen gambler, a sweet generous man). Gladys helped out on the counter aided sometimes by Pat's daughter. The highlight of their menu was poached egg on toast. The ballroom at the back was laterly used as a bingo hall and I believe there had been a coffee bar upstairs (in the 60's?). Pat would refer to the very back of the building as the sweet factory. On the other side of the High St. was Tansley and Cooke (or was it Tansey?) where I rented my b/w telly and bought records.

Some random memories of Lewes in the 70's. Processed cheese from the International, sausages from "Porky" Prior, Sordo Lopez (not sure of spelling) wine that came in half gallon demi-johns from the off license next to the Rainbow ( Ken and Joan behind the bar). Great music and atmosphere at the Lamb (John and Annie). Rent on my flat in the High Street £4.50 a week inclusive of bills. Getting stoned in the Grange gardens!! Lots of casual sex!!

I remember the first day I came to Lewes. I was a rep then, and my first call was at the Co-Op, now Wallis and Wallis, and the man in there gave me the very sensible advice not to try and drive to Forbuoys (which might have been Martins back then), but to walk round. I had to call at Mooreys too, and remember there being a nice china shop nearby, which I assume was Potts.
The butchers where Monsoon is now had become a Dewhursts by the time I moved to Lewes.
