Why are the council so against allowing boats to moor along the river. A friend of mine was turned down when he applied for permission to build a pontoon to moor his boat even though he owns a stretch of river bank. Its a bit like banning cars from the road. Their reason they said, it would affect wildlife and damage the banks and yet I never seen the council or inviromental people clearing rubbish from the ouse or maintaining the banks. The river ouse is a bonus to Lewes and personally I think boats enhance it even more. I shall sit back now and await the flak.

I agree, Lewes doesn't make the most of the river at all.
The John Harvey should take over the Argos carpark and put a jetty/pontoon out so people can boat up from Newhaven or down from Barcombe, like the Black Rabbit at Arundel.
There should also be a decent public slipway and a weir downstream to maintain a decent water level in Lewes.

I purchased the Quay at Southerham a few years back and have spent a lot of time and money restoring it as it is part of Lewes history, barges used to moor here to take lime from the cement works. I approached the council and environmental agency to see if they could clear some of the debris from the Ouse affronting the Quay. I was told that it was my responsibility. Also I approached Southern water two years ago to ask them if they could repair a large hole in the side of the Quay put there by them many years ago to enable them to insert a waste water pipe that comes out on the face of the Quay. Even though it is their responsibility and in spite of me telling them it was undermining the Quay I am still waiting.

Boats on the tidal Ouse should be allowed provided they are not occupied by the inevitable new age scum. I have a narrow boat on the Oxford canal and believe me there are extreme problem areas full of what we call rat boats occupied by low life who pay for nothing in society what so ever.

Although I agree with you Ducatipete that boats should be allowed on the river Ouse Surely the authorities would be able to vet all applicants before allowing permission to moor there. I have had no dealings with the new age crowd so I can't cast an opinion. I have travelled quite a lot on the continent and find most of the boat dwellers to be very decent. I was talking earlier about the smaller boats used for pleasure although houseboats in my opinion would be brilliant, the only trouble would be electric, sewage and water.

I'm surprised that LDC/ESCC/ABC haven't turned the Ouse into a money spinner. They could charge for mooring, demand an annual licence fee and then levy a 'wash tax' ostensibly to pay for the damage caused by boats slowly gliding up and down. Of course we'd need lots of big metal signs everywhere threatening non-payers with heavy fines and the whip. Personally I prefer the river to be quiet and peaceful like it is now.

SHS, it appears Badom Tssh has got your measure. Whats this about charging a wash tax to pay for the damage caused by boats going up and down. What a load of dribble, there is more damage to the banks caused by cattle and wildlife not forgetting the tide coming in and out. Personally I prefer you to be quiet and peaceful and I put your comments down as sarcasm.

Dave thats a brilliant idea. I expect the Argos building to be empty soon anyway. We desperately need a river walk, more boats and at least two more bridges for walking over.

I agree with Dave and King Cnut, two more bridges and more boats. The bridges would have to be quite high to allow boats under at high tide. Can you honestly see the powers to be allowing this. I can't.

Lewes thrives DESPITE Ldc not thanks to it ! Maybe one day they will realise that what makes Lewes such a nice place are the visitors who come here and spend their money , God forbid they should improve the river , that would benefit locals and visitors , can't have that , comes under the heading of CHANGE .

I've always thought there should be some form of group that sees Lewes for what it really is; a delightful town (with masses of history & character) nestling in the Downs. I wouldn't live anywhere else! Shame our council is blind
