Does anyone have any experience of getting their kids in to Bhasvic from a Lewes address. I hear the college is increasingly oversubscribed and getting a place if you don't live in Brighton might be tricky.

Thanks for your response. We're actually thinking ahead to next year. Any idea about the success rate of applicants from the Lewes area?

Why don't you speak to the college? Apparently the majority of Priory yr11 who have just left are going to either Varndean or BHASVIc. Hardly any going to Sussex Downs. BHASVIC has a reputation for being more rigid and academic and attracts a lot more of the private school kids. Varndean is perceived as more relaxed and arty but also offers the IB as well as Alevels. For vocational and BTEC courses look at City College, who offer a good range.

My oldest went there from Priory and middle one just going. Most of their friends seem to prefer BHASVIC but Varndean is good as well (if difficult to get to by public transport). I was not aware there was a problem with admission, nor of any 'private school kids' cohort (if that is of any interest at all).

Colleges don't consider your home address do they? I thought that was only schools - colleges just take the best students in the same way as universities.

I went to bhasvic. There were loads of students there from Lewes. They were considered the posh set compared to all the Brighton students. It was a right pain in the arse for them to get there and back, heavy traffic in and out of Brighton/Lewes all the time.

You are right bhasvic will only take the best students irrelevant of where you are. A pain to get too but well worth it and acedemically renowned. This college cuts the mustard and college places are keenly sought after, admission criteria is all about the grades and not the miles.

Basically all of priory year 11 who applied to Bhasvic were accepted. You are only rejected of your place if you do not achieve the minimum number of GCSE's. Both my children preferred Varndean by far anyway, although both good colleges.

Whilst being old, but in touch with most things, I am out of touch with local education. Whatever happened to the Priory Sixth Form? I know it transferred to the Lewes Tertiary College, now Sussex Downs, together with firm undertakings to maintain the very high Priory standards. It is disgraceful that our Sixth Formers have to trek into Brighton for a decent education. Are the Sussex Downs staff embarrassed by this descent into mediocrity, or are they all too busy plotting revolution in the staff room?

Priory Schmiory, wasn't much use to 50% of the pupils when it was LCGSFB.

My son was at BHASVIC from Barcombe where we lived at the time. We had to wait till all the kids in the catchment had been allocated and only heard rather late that he had a place. It is very big, over 2,000 kids and therefore not very personal. The exacting standards depends entirely upon the teachers and the pastoral care is not brilliant. Plenty of .Lewes kids get in but not all from outside the immediate area. There is a cohort from private schools. Personally I think it is just too big and doesn't offer many BTECs if any. And now they are closing Haywards Heath! Doesn't make sense to me as they offered more vocational courses. Not everyone is suited to the rigor of A Levels.
