I didn't make my usuall south street as it was closing so headed to fisher street.
What I got was a large portion of Oil and over cooked cod and few chips.

I had fish and chips tonight from the chippy in Ringmer and they were great, much better than those in Lewes.

Would not touch the mobile van - the standards of hygiene are notoriously poor.
Fisher Street Chippy is horrible - just as Mr Chips describes.
Yummy Yummy - was recommended to me but it was pretty similar to Fisher Street
South Street - the best in Lewes.
Newhaven has a relatively good Chippie (on the road to the beach).
Must try Ringmer...

Trawlers at Seaford. By far the best Fish and Chips around. Failing that South street is best in Lewes

I second that Miss Fish. Much better than South Street too.

The Ringmer one is terrible, however i like the Fisher Street one. South St used to be the best but has gone down hill, there chips seem to be welded to the paper by grease!

South Street is best in Lewes but it is not great. It's a bit out of town but the chippy in Brighton Marina is superb albeit very pricey.

I've never had a problem with the Fisher Street one - usually nice crispy batter and decent sized portions of chips (one large portion feeds 3 adults)

I wouldn't eat the rubbish from Fisher street if you paid me,value my health too much.
South Street or Ringmer are both great.

I have to say that I was pleasantly suprised by the much improved chips I had from Fisher Street recently. Nice colour, good texture, not too oily, and a decent sized portion. Well done!

south st chippy is great but why do people park on the dyl when there is a car park across the road ..................lazyness you wont get a ticket there coz you can see your car and you dont have to buy a ticket coz you will only be a mo

Plus that car park is free after six anyway which I would have thought is when most people would be shopping for fish and chips. It's quite a tight car park though, I imagine the 4x4 drivers out there might struggle to get in, given that so many of them seem incapable of parking in decent sized spaces at the best of times.

We always use that handy car park when getting chips and fish. In fairness I did once see a 4x4 parked up while its owners were doing similarly. Had the Monstrous Behemoth of a vehicle not taken up at least 2 spaces it'd have been rather more helpful, mind.

Personally, I think South Street Fish Bar is pretty good, and certainly the best in Lewes that I have tasted. However, if your horizons extend to the "Lewes area" then I would go for the van (based in Uckfield I think) that stops outside the Fountain in Plumpton every Tuesday. The fish and chips are top notch, and you get given crockery, cutlery and condiments by the pub (or at least you did last time I checked).

PS. When I lived on the west side of town, before moving to Cliffe, I would occasionally visit the van in Plumpton on a Tuesday to collect my evening meal and drive home like a mad man, observing the speed limits naturally, to sample their food in the comfort of my own home. Have not done that since I moved to Cliffe though. The food would be abit TOO cold.

Ah yes, the silver spray - I remember it well. I think it closed in the early 1980s though so can't claim to remember what their fish and chips tasted like.

I last visited "The Van" about one year ago. So it was going strong a long way beyond the 1980s. I guess you must be thinking of some place else "Mr Chips"? Incidentally, where does the name "Silver Spray" some from ?!

No Cliffe, I was talking about the Silver Spray mentioned earlier - not commenting on your post about the van. The Silver Spray was a fish and chip shop by the Landsdown. Damn fine fish and chips.

I am sorry but what are people talking about? Clearly in terms of value for money South Street is almost impossible to beat, plus they support rugby over football...always a good sign. However if you are talking about chips, I honestly believe the best fried chip is a surprizing newcomer....'Yummys'. Fried to perfection.

But - not in Plumpton this Tuesday (4th Aug) due to a family illness. They put a sign up to inform their regulars of this - great service! Get well soon!

Family illness? Probably gastroenteritis or salmonella (given the apparent hygiene of the van and people associated with it).

I finally tried South Street the other day.
I was very impressed (particularly with the batter and size of the fillets), but the chip portions are smaller and I reckon it cost about a fiver more than I usually spend in Fisher Street on a similar order.
I'll definitely go back, but it's not impressive enough to stop me going back to Fisher St altogether
