there MUST be something we can do about that glorious stretch of sandy beach at Newhaven that is going to waste - the only bit of sand for miles in fact - used to be a great public amenity, what right has anybody got to close it down it should be able to be enjoyed by all - what can we do - petition? but to who?

The French own the beach and the pier, but I doubt that "le ptition" idea would be received well!

I have many fond memories of that beach, and the breakwater. Great fun for the kids in Summer, suitably bleak for Echo and the Bunnymen fans in the Winter! Those were the days, now there is no reason to go to Newhaven.

I don't think that owning part of Newhaven could be considered revenge! The joke is on them...in my biased opinion!

I also spent many a happy hour on that beach in my formative years.
But think carefully. Do you really wish to bath on a beach that is soon to be only a few hundred yards from a waste incinerator? (courtesy of you local Con' council who, like the parking scheme much prefere to dismiss rather than act on public concerns)
Think noise, think pollution, think dustcarts, think smell, think Tory, think go somewhere else!

If you want to use it, just go down there and use it. Police patrols are slim on the ground at the best of times these days and there's not been a fence built yet that someone can't climb over, dig under or break through. Rather than complaining about bureaucracy gone mad and writing angry letters to a French company who probably aren't even aware that this section of beach is closed off, just do something about it. French farmers think nothing of blockading ports at the drop of a hat so maybe you should all learn a lesson from that, take affirmative action and go stage a sit-in on the beach or something?
