I’ve recently noticed several signs in the shape of a yellow flower have appeared on verges, some near Nevill green.
Mildly puzzled. Any ideas? Ta

I think these could be something to do with the uncut grass areas for the wild insects

They're wildlife verges. From ESCC website:
Wildlife verges
We have selected verges across the county known as wildlife verges, which have been identified as having wildlife of particular interest. Roadside verges can provide a habitat for many rare species of wildflowers and mammals, which need to be protected.
To help maintain these habitats we make sure that we do not normally cut our Wildlife verges between 1 March and 31 August. This allows for the wildflowers to seed.
The wildlife verges are marked with small yellow indicators. These help our grass cutting team to identify them correctly.
How does East Sussex Highways look after Wildlife verges?
We have selected verges across the county known as Wildlife verges, which have been identified as having particular wildlife interest.
Roadside verges can provide a habitat for wildlife, which as a local authority we have a duty to protect and enhance wherever possible. To help maintain these habitats we make sure that we do not normally cut our Wildlife verges between 1 March and 31 August. This allows for wild flowers to seed.
The Wildlife verges are marked with small yellow indicators. These help our grass cutting team to identify them correctly.
How do I request for a verge to become a Wildlife verge?
Let us know the specific location and types of wild flower and/or the wildlife that are using the habitat. The County Ecologist will then assess the location to decide whether it is suitable to become a designated Wildlife verge.
Contact [email protected] with the above details if you have a verge which you would like to become a Wildlife verge.

Shows where special wildflower seeds are. You'll see them along lots of roads.

They had these verges on the central reservation on the way into Brighton from Falmer a few years ago, the first year it looked great, now it looks a bloody mess. Just the strongest thugs have survived. Yarrow, Oxeye Daisy, Dandelion, Buddleia, Thistles and Nettles with long grass. Lazy, Cheap and short sighted.

Old Mayor has summed it up nicely.
It's a cost cutting exercise by the council and sold to us as caring about wildlife.

Please go onto Google Earth and on to the Brighton Road, as an example of what it use does to look like several years ago, neat clean grass, and then compare it to how it looks now. Then tell your councillor the scheme is rubbish. Or reduce our council taxes.

Yes because when I think of all the things the council provide and rank them in order of what is most important to not cut back on, short grass on roadside verges always comes above street cleaning, libraries and social care...

These signs are nothing more than useless urban clutter. I haven't found anyone yet who knows what they mean but even if they did, the signs provide no useful information for drivers. Nether do they specify where the wildlife area begins or ends so grass cutting contractors are none the wiser. The signs often appear on by passes or urban verges of no special wildlife merit. Since the number of cuts this year has been reduced to only TWO there is no differenc and I suspect it's simply an excuse for low standards.
The Department of Transport has just issued guidance on reducing useless signs and street clutter. ESCC take note!
In the meantime I can only think that they might provide useful poster sites for community use.

All you who complain the verges look a mess should get a grip. If we lose our Bees were all gonna eventually lose or food supplies. Wild verges may look shabby but its vital for the wildlife- DON'T use pesticides !!!!
