Some people think/act/are posh, but most are fairly regular people who don't trouble themselves about whether Lewes has a McDonald's or not. I find snobbery to be a hugely revealing behaviour in humans. It's utterly vacuous and it pains me to see joyless adults like that who feel compelled to think or act in that way.

Greensleeves, when you say you find snobbery a hugely revealing behaviour what do you think it reveals? That they are snobs? What an incredibly original contribution to human knowledge. Next up - meanness reveals people are... wait for it... mean.

@Basil - it reveals them to be insecure and fundamentally unhappy with their lives, if they feel the need to judge and look down on others about something as absurd as "class". Its not about being just "snobs", its why they act out that pointless behaviour in the first place. Superiority complex.

The title of the thread should be "Why everyone in Lewes thinks they're posh"
Unfortunately we are now into a second generation of people with a poor grasp of English; thanks to comprehensive schools and political correctness.
There are still many in this town who had a proper education, and are literate and numerate. They are known as "salt of the earth"- and certainly not POSH.

I don't think you need to be posh to find the idea of a McDonald's near you as vile. It's just common sense.

Posh or otherwise, why do some people feel so strongly opposed to there being a McDonald's in Lewes? "Vile" seems a bit much.

You're right it's not vile that's too much. It's more like just disgusting or do you think it would like nice on the high street or on cliff? It's not a class issue it's an issue of aesthetics, nutrition, fat bergs clogging the sewers and human arteries, the inevitable litter, deforestation to make way for the meat and Palm oil, the profit going overseas. Did I miss anything?

@Pauline, look at the verges surrounding Lewes; They're already littered with Mc Rubbish. Let people choose for themselves whether they clog their arteries. Palm oil is in virtually every processed food product, not just McD's....

Ok maybe I should give up you're right let it all go to sh*t. What does anywhere matter. Let the corporates take over. Let's live in the matrix.

@pauline, you make some reasonable and valid points (mainly on ethics and the environment), but I sense that a lot of people's objections to McDonald's is down to mere snobbery and nimbyism, even if yours are more legitimate.
