Although Lewes undoubtedly has many great pubs I have yet to discover a nice beer garden within walking distance of the town centre - any ideas??

Most pubs have beer gardens in Lewes although they are restricted to small, coutyard type gardens. The royal oak, snowdrop, Rainbow and Dorset are all ok.
If you want a decent garden, a trek to the Juggs or Trevor is usually the order of the day

If you don't have time to trek off to Glynde or Kingston, the Swan has a pleasant garden

There aren't any decent pub gardens in Lewes. The Swan or the Rainbow's rooftop garden are probably the best of a bad bunch.
Outside Lewes try the Juggs or Cock Inn (though the latter is by the busy A26.
Best to travel a bit further and visit the Cricketer's Arms in Berwick (off A27) or The Anchor, near Barcome.

Its gotta be the front of the Rainbow. I know some use it as a pavement but its spot on for the Charckie grill.

I like the Snowdrop. The Trevor always seems a bit too big to be a decent garden. Never liked the food there as well. By the way, the Elephant and Castle used to be good for food but last time I went there it seemed to have gone right down. Was that just a bad day?

The Trevor does do a nice line in snuff and pork scratchings, and after that you can't taste the veg anyway.
