I'm thinking of buying a house in Morris Road in the Cliff part of Lewes, does anyone have any views on what its like to live there? It seems quite nice.

Morris Road is a lovely little oasis off the high street. It's in the parking zone so you'll need a permit to park, and it flooded three years ago so check the insurance premiums first to avoid any nasty shocks.

Its nice except for all those noisy dancers with bells all over their clothes. You may also get woken in the early hours by the night club. Its revellers regularly re enact WW1 on their zimmer frames. The beer's nice though. Ever tried out of date warm brown ale?

Agree with tooth fiary. Good road close to Cliffe shopping. If you are doing you place up, the back entrance to the excellent Chandlers builders merchants is in Morris Road

I'd also get a FULL survey of the house... I know at least one in Morris Road had problems after the flood in 2000, it's foundations were almost non existant and the bay window sank down. Underpinning was required. I heard that the house's foundations were were litterally a row of bricks on clay just below gound level. As a former resident of Cliffe, and a flood victim, I'd NEVER buy a house in Cliffe area at least until proper defences are sorted out. Insurance might be ok now, but should it flood again you'll have big problems. The parking permits are also a big problem, Cliffe residents as well as other will park in Morris Road as parking for them has been cut totally to zero. Plus points are it's relatively quiet, safe and a nice place to live right in town but doesn't feel like it at all. I loved the Cliffe area to live in but the flooding was a complete nightmare (6 months out of my home) GIve it SERIOUS considerations!

I know the house you are talking about but the subsidence was there long before the flood and it was one house in the middle of a row, the two either side are perfectly fine so I think it must be something to do with that one set of foundations.
I know Morris Road and some of its inhabitants very well and I know they will tell you that the advantages of living in the road (community spirit, safety, convenience etc.) far outweigh the extremely rare disadvantages.
I have been wanting to move there for ages but for various reasons haven't been able to.
Insurance doesn't seem to be a problem any more either, I know many people who have been able to insure houses in Cliffe
I would say, if you like the house, buy it specially if you have young kids, you won't regret it and I'm sure your new neighbours will welcome you.

Morris Road? It's fine and dandy. But don't move in before you've bought a boat.

Certainly that street has a nice community feel about it...I'd still consider the parking and flooding as a concern, otherwise it's a great area. Certainly all around the Cliffe area it's very quiet after 5pm any day and often it's quiet during a busy shopping day

I would have to say that if you want to live in Cliffe you should buy a house in Morris Road.
Cliffe High Street is all flats and no peace, South Street is too long and has a pub at the end of it which spills noise at closing time. Timberyard lane has that horrendous affordable housing development (how did they get away with that monstrosity?)
Morris Road as The Tooth Fairy says is an oasis, the best road in the best part of Lewes. So good I think I'll move there, how much is that house?

As you mentioned the Snowdrop, what's it like these days? I haven't been down there for years. Do they still sell Harveys?

It's still there and yup they do still sell Harveys but its not what it used to be.
They've turned the upstairs into some awful Japanese style function room with really uncomfortable chairs.
It seems to be slowly morphing into a Bernie Inn!
Its a crying shame, it used to be my favourite pub.

Thanks, Smiler. It doesn't sound like I've missed much then. This seems to be the trend in Lewes, converting repectable dives into 'pre-club' (or whatever) bars. The Lamb and The Rainbow Tavern have become no-go areas for anyone over the age of twenty five, both 'bars' now inhabited by morons drinking brightly coloured fluids from bottles, while ear splitting muzak vibrates the plaster from the walls. What's happening to the character of Lewes? If dreadful pubs and even more dreadful 'brasseries' is what we have to look forward to, heaven help us.

Halifax insure against flood as standard. Also try Charcol online (broker) because they offered me Norwich Union insurance when NU wouldn't do it direct. Obviously, flooding could happen, but the risk is relatively low as apparently various things (like Spring tides, consecutive days of rainfall) have to all happen at the same time, which although possible, isn't necessarily that likely.

Not much on my mind right now, but it's not important. I've just been letting everything happen without me. I just don't have anything to say right now.
