A quick glance at the archive shows that in April 2008, the threads included the following: Shanaz closing down (?!), Thieves on the Nevill, Lewes the New Tibet, Question for local drivers, Motown music, The Pells, Twinkling streets, Lewes in the Guardian, Steve King fired!! - Takeover at the Pan, Twats with cars, Ideas for kids' activities, Primary schools, Tradiung standards just rang, Space Dust, Cady at the pells Pool, Shop with no name, Did it snow yesterday? Rooks going up, Mobile disco? Speedwatch in Ringmer, House prices on the slide in Lewes, Pipex - the service is rubbish, The financial downturn, Children need to be re-taught respect, Lewes Town Council Meeting, Where have my digi-box channels gone? ...........................................................................................................
A mixed bag of stuff - some posts more interesting than othes, but the point is that it was genuinely mixed, with a strong focus on the local community. Compare it to today. Even though we can now silence the political threads if we don't like them, it would be good to see that lively local spirit come back.

Perhaps political engagement is just on the rise, which could be seen as a good or bad thing. We are not just concerned about what goes on locally, but what goes on nationally and in the world?
Or perhaps life was just calmer and better under a Labour government (even in spite of the global financial crisis) and a solid local Liberal Democrat MP? Perhaps our media wasn't quite so antagonistic, partisan or pushed national fears quite as much as it does today. Perhaps the deep cuts and austerity under mainly Tory party rule has worn people down and this is now what is important to people and therefore are talking about it more than ever. Maybe Facebook is to blame - as that has become also far more political in recent years. Back in 2008, FB was relatively in its infancy.
I'd genuinely love there to come a time (sooner the better) when the political environment isn't so volatile and the country isn't so deeply divided. Maybe then we can get back to discussing more trivial issues about the weather, mobile discos and indian restaurants!
