So who will they get most of their customers from, the Volunteer, the Lansdown, or the Lamb? Wetherspoons are so bad they'll attract the lowest of the low.

While their pubs are pretty soulless their beer is excellent and food decent / cheap. We could do worse.

Lewes could do a lot worse , I've eaten in a few Wetherspoons and I was very impressed . It's typical pub grub but decent and sensibly priced , I have eaten in many pretentious Lewes eateries , been served food on various objects other than plates and then paid a lot of money for very average food .. any and all new alternatives should be welcomed .

Good value for money and will break the monopoly of the greedy local brewer.
That should shake it up and would give the town some much needed balance. Hope spoons will consider it. Wow we could afford to take the family out for diner more often.

It's got to be better than what's there already. What's wrong with a variety of venues in town? And yes, Redballs sensible prices would be welcome. Lots of people go out of town to eat at the moment.

Would have thought the White hart would be a better place for a wetherspoon. Much larger and they could have one of their hotels there.

Weatherspoons have been trying to get into Lewes for a few years now, i do hope this rumor is true.
Egon Weatherspoons would do a great job clearing up the Crown even with preservation order's on buildings they can turn a place around, the Crown in Lewes need a bloody good shake up once and for all and get rid of the unsightly joke of a place it has become now and being run into the ground, its just a hotel for mainly people in receipt of housing benefit now ive been told.
Weatherspoons could turn it into one of their hotels,bar,restaurant.. Perhaps the bar moved more to the back of the building or return the original pub which is behind the Crown back to the bar area ???
Anything is better then it is now

Browns is frozen food served by a corporation much bigger than wetherspoons who pay their staff just as badly as wetherspoons. I personally like the uniqueness of Lewes and have such a variation of small businesses as well as the larger ones. However, a giant 'pub' company is not something I'd be welcoming to Lewes!

I currently work for Wetherspoon. The first rumour I heard was that the company had purchased the White Hart Hotel. I spoke to my manager about it, and they said that it wasn't true, and that any possibilities of JDW coming to Lewes were next to impossible due to the strength of support for local businesses, breweries and the like, both from the council and locals.
I will ask again, as the influx of rumours about JDW and Lewes have increased remarkably over the last few months. I think it's all very unlikely, but if we can build a Premier Inn, who knows what's next?
