I witnessed the Battle of the Somme anniversary being commemorated by some of the Bonfire Societies this morning at the war memorial and would like to thank them. I am though appalled that the town council did nothing. I thought our mayor and his deputy were historians? The town council should be ashamed of itself. Well done to those who made the effort.

My husband Philip Amey travelled from Felixstowe to Lewes at 3:30 this morning to join the Neville Juvenile Bonfire Society at the War Memorial, if he can make the effort I would have thought the Town Council could have.

The council allowed white poppies on the War Memorial last November. So their insulting refusal to attend this morning's solemn ceremony, held after good notice, comes as no surprise. I hope they'll be gone soon.

@Jamey, May I salute your husbands dedication. I would have been present to remember the fallen, but illness has prevented it. In respect of the Town Council the less said the better, totally beyond the pale.

Agree with comments above. We do not need Lewes Town Council, they have little interest in what is important across the town. They are more interested in themselves than those they should serve.

What more could we expect from all the Green's and so called Independant/Green Councillors on the Town/District Councils who are only out for their own interest

Quite simply, those that were there did, those that couldn't didn't. Those that thought it was perhaps something that wasn't necessary weren't missed. Those that sacrificed their lives did so that we are all able to have to have that choice and I am eternally grateful to them. We should all be grateful for the freedom. Stop whining about what others do!!!

GaG, maybe you should have said......what the council do not do. Why would they deplete their own funds if someone else will do it. Do t do anything for the 90th birthday either did they?
