Hey!
Having just moved to Lewes, I'm frankly disappointed at the lack of places to eat out that do vegan options! Not a single pub I've been to in Lewes seems to cater to vegans (and barely any have decent vegetarian options, either), and even in the little cafes it's impossible to avoid butter or eggs. This means that me and my little boy can't really go out and enjoy our new town as much as we'd like
Anyone have any good vegan recommendations? Everyone's always claiming Lewes is so progressive - so where are the vegan cafes and ethical places to eat out!

Have you tried The Swan, in Southover? They have a great range of vegetarian food, and on the odd occasion that I've had vegan guests they've reported that they had a good choice too. Do book, because it's a very popular pub, and when you do tell them you are vegan.

@sadvegan Bill's does a lovely aubergine and chickpea dhal which I would definitely recommend. Other than that, I think Erawan is very good for veggie/vegan stuff.

Chaulas also do vegan dishes as well, both their restaurant food, as well as their pre-prepared frozen meals as well that they sell in the restaurant and their shop.
I'm not a vegan, but I often avoid meat/dairy dishes (both for eating out and at home), and yea, choice is not particularly great for eating out, as we still live in a society that is reasonably addicted to meat and dairy based foods, but its slowly getting better. I'm sure you will receive some abuse and well-worn "jokes" about your dietary preferences on here, but thats the way some people are unfortunately and as a vegan, I'm sure you're used to it as well.

@ yawn - because he follows his parents diet, so therefore he is a vegan and doesn't eat meat, dairy or other animal by-products. I answered it due to it being a foolish question and presumably an attempt at trolling dietary choices (because it clearly means SO much to you what others eat!).

@ carnivore. And the ignorant trolling begins as predicted! Always happy to respond on this topic though, as so much misinformation
A balanced plant based diet is perfectly healthy for humans of all ages. There are plenty of parents who force feed their children with processed foods, sweets, meats and dairy products, which is catastrophic to their health, but when someone suggests they provide a vegan diet to their child, their heads explode with rage (and ignorance) before they know any facts about the child or the diet.

@ carnivore. Protein and calcium are not a problem with plant based foods - why is this decades old myth still circulating when theres plenty of research available on the internet dispelling it. We have canines like most mammals, including many herbivores - including gorillas and other primates, and hippos....with far larger and more ferocious canines I may add. (and don't eat meat or dairy).

I don't think Carnivore has access to the internet as if they did they would know that you can acquire anything your body needs from a plant based diet, with the exception of vit b12 which incidently has to be injected into meat products anyway so you are better off taking a supplement, the fact that processed meat is classed as a carcinogenic should surely put some people off, Carnivore maybe you should watch Earthlings or Cowspiricy and then come back with some more informed trolling

Not vegan etc is partly correct. The original vegan sect, the Jains, only survided because of the weevils in their flour. Vit B12 is natural in animal-based products and does not need to be injected. The one widely found natural plant based source of Vit B12 is comfrey (not found in India where the Japns lived). but easily foraged locally at this time of year (starting with the grassy bank opposie the Elly).
As to the ethics, people who hate animals so much they don't want there to be any is quite entitled not to put bits of dead ones in their mouths. Otherwise. the ethics of food lies in avoiding both gratuitous cruelty and waste. It's unethical not to use every part of a carcase - not to eat meat, wear leather, fur etc.
Animals die. Get over it.

Given modern food storage, preparation and cooking methods, B12 deficiency is not exclusively an issue for vegans, but for everyone really to be aware of. Therefore plenty of foods are artificially fortified with B12, like cereals and some drinks, as deficiency of b12 does also occur in meat/dairy consumers as well as in some vegans.
@ not vegan but understand. I've been meaning to watch "Earthlings" for a while, but can't bring myself to it. It looks extremely distressing....
Factory farming is so cruel, and I don't think its "animal hating" to want as few livestock animals as possible on this planet constantly bred and brought into a lifetime of incarceration, cruelty and then early death - all for the purpose of satisfying human appetites. This is not even factoring in the enormous environmental impact of intensive animal agriculture, nor the numerous health issues associated with excessive consumption of meat and dairy.
On 17 May 2017 at 6:25pm Pedro wrote:
@ and thats a fact - our processes for eating meat have drastically changed over the last century or so. Its also more of a problem in some societies than it is in others. Western diets are too reliant on animal products, and this has consequences for our health and the environment as production keeps ramping up.

Pestle and mortar Thai boutique in the needle makers sells little vegan takeaway lunches.
