Has anyone out there recently tried to call Lewes District Council? 20 minutes waiting on hold to get through to planning and then someone in Eastbourne answers and tells me they cant help and says “why dont I email them instead?” is this really customer service?

They couldn't set up a direct debit for council tax payments for an acquaintance who's just moved. They couldn't access the LDC system from Eastbourne.
Really, wouldn't it have been a good idea to make sure the systems were compatible before the merger took place?

Tell me about it! I wanted to contact them yesterday and there was not even a phone number on the website that I could see. I googled a number and rang it and waited an age before finally getting through to a switchboard in Eastbourne. I was then told that they could not help me because it was a Lewes question and after pleading for a direct contact at Lewes I was transferred to an answering machine with no option to talk to a human being. I suspect itisaploy to avoid too many phone calls which take up staff time and so cost money. The only problem is..... I thought they were a public body and so facilitating contact with the public should be a duty!

I didn't realise Lewes was at the of the council tax charts again, Mavis, so thanks for that. Iirc, it hasn't been out of the top ten ever since council tax was introduced.
If we're paying that much, it doesn't seem unreasonable to expect to be able to talk to someone who can actually deal with your problem.

There’s no one left there to pick the phone up. No workers left and all the managers (tons of them) spend the day in Nero or Eastbourne

All their meetings must have been cancelled today.
I rang, pressed the appropriate options (there is, as yet, no option for "if you need to talk to a human before you tear out your hair and lose the will to live..."), got answered pretty quickly and spoke to someone who both knew what I was talking about and was able to answer my questions.
Maybe early afternoon on a Thursday is a good time to ring!

Any outstanding problem with a public sector firm or public sector body I always email the CEO. In this case:

I would just like to point out that there are some hard working people in the Lewes offices whose job it is to answer calls from the public. They’re completely under resourced and are having more work thrown at them all of the time. The staff are struggling under the pressure. Feel free to criticise the service that you receive but it’s not because the people on the ground aren’t trying.

Exactly, in the know. And that's why the £125,000 to £130,000 CEO has to be told.
