A working man* is someone who goes out to work to earn sufficient money to support himself and his family. From an unskilled manual worker, to a so-called "professional" like a doctor or barrister. They may be working or middle class: but they do their bit.
Unfortunately, there are those who choose not to attempt work as their benefits are not far short of what they can earn. They are not workers.
* The use of the masculine term also applies to feminine workers where appropriate.

The working mans club was established for working class men who generally had hard manual jobs and a wife who stayed at home. Things have changed and a rebranding is long overdue to make it seem more appealing to families. The Lewes WMC was moved to their current location thanks to hard graft by a small number of community focused locals. Maybe not as grand as our new cinema but still worthy of a mention.

I walked in there once recently to see what it was all about. I was treated like an alien. The smell of old people put me off anyway. I left.

Jess you were not thrown out for being a Tory. The club is not political. In fact I would wager that you have not come in at all.
