Oh yeuch,I have discovered why it smells so bad. Apparently they are actually using human excrement . You are allowed to use it on certain sorts of field I gather, so what you smell is quite literally an overflowing latrine
Isn`t there some over arching environment fouling legislation , is this really necessary ?
I am amazed

I have a sneaky suspicion that you can't use human excrement for fertilser here in the UK (I have a query out to the Environmental Agency), but, you can use urine amazingly - check it out here - h++p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compost#Urine. So feel free to relieve yourselves in my composter !! Now, now, form a queue please, ladies please avert your eyes !

Yes you can use humanure in the UK, either injected under the fields or sprayed as per a normal muck spreader.
It is UV treated for bugs and is the byproduct sludge of sewage farms.
Perfect recycling
And yes it stinks...
You are what you eat... ;-)

As above yes you can and it has been used for several years. Human excrement is on of the best fertilisers out there and truth be told your potatoes have probably been grown using it. I know a chap who has been driving tractors and trailers for the last ten years transporting the stuff from sewage farms to fields.

I used to live near an airport and they used to spray the runway with pig wee to stop it freezing. Pigs might fly etc

I have just reported this to the Environment Agency. They have formally taken all of the details and are going to investigate the smell from the Houndean area in Lewes.
This will hopefully confirm whether the practice used by the 'user' is compliant or not.
Although, I wouldn't want to be in their shoes!!......................especially if they stink as much as the stuff they are distributing.
Hopefully the problem will now get sorted.

no way is that the smell of the countryside - the smell of the countryside is usually more bovine in origin - ever since I was a kid the smell of muck spreading has remained the same - and NOT offensive in the way that this muck is (if indeed that is what it is) in the last week my home town has more the smell of the cannal than the cattle

Yup. Definitely different smell. No two ways about it.
