It amazes me that in such a beautiful town as Lewes, that every year we succeed in having the most UGLY decorated tree! Newhaven puts us to shame, come on Lewes, this is about the 4th year in a row and we don't do things by half!

As I understand it, aerial Christmas lights are very difficult to organise in Lewes because many of the absentee property owners or landlords, whose permission is required in order to string lights from buildings across School Hill and further afield, are often very hard to contact or simply don't respond. Without leave to attach safe fixings to properties, along with permission for works on to provide power, lights cannot be supported.
Alternatively, what about converting School Hill into a ski-jump slope for the weekend after next? All we need is a ramp placed outside Steamer Trading, and a landing area between NatWest and Cancer Research. And snow. A comprehensive map is shown at the link below.

Good thinking, Castle Gate. In fact, School Hill does convert into a ski-jump the moment it snows and/or ices over, due to the failure of ESCC to grit any of the pavements. Rotten Row becomes an Olympic grade slalom and of course Keere Street is a black run. I can't think why we haven't nominated ourselves for the winter Olympics.

Lewes is humiliating. for the county town of East Sussex, the lack of street decs is quite frankly, disgusting.
As Barry says above, go to Uckfield or, as i did last night, visit Burgess Hill.
I don't care whether you consider these towns to be "chavsvilles" or concrete jungle....they look superb.
Again this just sums up everything that this town stands for...fcuk all !!!!

Hmmm, most towns don't have to spend £Â£Â£Â£ readying the streets for 5 November and cleaning up before dawn next day; I'd gathered that the Council (who are not my faves in any other way, BTW) had concluded that the Lewes population would rather they spent our council tax on that little affair and (therefore) had low-key Christmas decorations. Or we could pay more council tax and have both. Actually, I rather like the restrained Christmas tree lights - bit of a change from tacky Xmas-mania.

I was passing a farm in East Sussex on Saturday and there was a sign outside which read "Dig your own Christmas tree". I went in and started digging up a really nice specimen when the farmer shouted out, cant you bl@@dy read. I said yes it says dig your own christmas tree. Thats right he said " Dig your own Christmas tree" these are all mine.

Thank you to Matt for putting a link to the blog I did on the subject of Lewes Christmas Lights.
In response to Brixtonbelle. A couple of years back the Chamber bought, in bulk, sets of the strings of "icicle lights" that you still see outside a few shops at a discounted price. They offered them to shop owners for a reasonable sum and 50 sets were sold. Waitrose also offered to put them up for free.
Sadly last year, Waitrose didn't offer the service again and many of the shops didn't put them up. (you can't make someone decorate their shop).
