Yep the larger the better. Get rid of all those over priced, over rated independants and let the multi-nationals take over all of the town.
Pile em high, sell em cheap.

Me too. The bigger they are the easier it is to nick stuff and there will be a bigger car park to hang around in frightening the old biddies.

council and lewes chamber of commerce shot themselves in the foot here by introducing the parking scheme. With their large free car park tescos can pretty much take all the towns custom unopposed. Guess who will be screaming the loudest my bet is lewes chamber of commerce. don't affect me anyway cos i don't shop in lewes at all. There are better shops with better stuff and better prices elsewhere.

Agree with " ME".
Many "out of town" supermarkets already sell non food products so I don't see why all the fuss about the Lewes Tesco's.
As " ME" says... they have a large hassle free car park.
I went to the Lewes Market last Saturday and it was clear by the numbers of traffic wardens hunting prey that the powers that be want the town centre to be a people free zone.
A traffic wardens mandate used to be to keep traffic flowing smoothly.
In Lewes that is no longer the case.
In my 1 hour stay I watched numberous wardens constantly circling car parks waiting to pounce on any motorist who dare to return a few minutes late.
They seemed joyous in their work.
I even witnessed a Securicor van (parked outside of a bank would you believe) get its picture taken and ticket issued. So comical a scene was it that I took a picture.
Parking restrictions must be making a small fortune and the authorities are taking a cut... but it's killing Lewes.

TY for the picture compliments.
I tried to be as discrete as possible, though I expect they were too engaged in nicking motorist to notice me.
TF... For modesty's sake I obscured the face. Not too sure who Jabba is.... need enlightening.
lol
There seemed to be so many active traffic wardens in such a small area. I guess money has always been a great motivator.
Maybe we should start a rogues gallery?
Brian... I find it helps to be slightly nuts.

Can we discuss Tesco please. We all know about the parking and dislike it etc. Tesco is a threat to Lewes and other small towns like it. If you feel minded go to the planning committee meeting when it is discussed and if you feel brave speak for 2 mins for or against it. It is NOT a fait a complet (and if I have spelt that wrong - who cares)

The point is that the parking situation is directly linked to tescos expansion plans. They are a business and all they are intersted in is making money. LDC have handed them a golden opportunity on a plate.

Who wants to discuss Tesco? The parking situation in Lewes is a far bigger issuse for the residents of Lewes, futher more the local economy is being dragged down by it.

Has it occurred to anyone that Tesco's may be beneficial to Lewes? Since there's always queues at the checkouts it must be popular. I know for a fact (and Tesco's own recent survey proved it) that many people go to Tesco's then walk across to Cliffe High street and visit the small shops, knowing their car is parked safely and free at Tesco's. Without Tesco's we'd have more high-rise flats, no free parking and less trade for the small shops. The small shops would have more customers if (a) parking was easy and (b) they were all open at least once a week until 8 or 9pm. Most people work - they come home and the only place open is the supermarket. Many people work all day on saturday too. Tesco's is successful because it gives customers what they want. The parking scheme is the problem, not Tesco's.

Well Chav... I went to work and made enough money so that I could retire before I reached 50 to live in a 6 bedroom detached house with lots of parking.
Hope that's alright with you? ?? ???
lol
Agree with "SHS"
It's worth remembering that one of the prime reasons for the scheme was to bring order to on street parking so that residents we able to park.
Don't ever remember killing the town centre or profiteering being mentioned!
I wonder how much longer it will be for Lewesians to click on that the authorities (Councils) really are screwing them.
With the state of edukayshun maybe never...

I agree that parking is linked with Tescos in both a negative and positive way as discussed. However it is the goods that they hope to sell and the impact upon local shops (not just local traders but Dixons, Smiths etc.) If their trade diminishes then all central Lewes is affected. 22% of Tescos customers do not go into Lewes. Lewes accounts for 75% of convenience shopping in Lewes. Tesco only want to expand so as to compete with Hollingbry etc. It will not take much for more lewes shops to go and we will be left with charity shops and middle class trinket shops etc. WE should battle agianst the parking AND Tescos.

The roads are clearer, you can find a space, the prices are reasonable and it stops all the estate agents taking up the spaces all day.
There are far more important things to worry about.

Anyhowz, "Nursey" says she likes to have me in bed by 8.30 sharp.
Chavy... You really must be quite a guy.
Hung like a stallion, birds throwing themselves at your feet, all clamouring for just a second of your acute wit and wisdom. Expect you're also a friend to the stars... past, present and future but are too modest to mention it.
Some guys just have everything,

I believe, allegedly, Tesco is obliged - under the terms of planning conditions imposed at the outset of building on a greenfield site - that it must provide free parking in the 'top' car park for shoppers using the towns shops, for a two hour period. It is perfectly possible for able bodied people to 'walk' around Lewes, it is a small, compact and interesting town. There seems to be a group of drivers who would be better off in the States, or Australia where, due to the significantly greater amount of space and modern town planning, it is much more feasible to drive all around the towns. So get out of your cars you lazy, selfish, roadhogs!
