For Jill,
I think its just becoming more easier to report so why able to see more of it. Women have been getting attacked by men in all professions, in all types of spaces or places for centuries all over the globe. It's not Uber that's the problem causing it, its the men doing it. Plenty of non Uber taxi drivers are doing it but dont get caught as difficult to track and find them.
The men are the issue.

All LDC licensed taxi drivers are DBS checked. Do Uber insist on DBS checks for their drivers?
If not, I don't think they should be licensed and I won't ever use them. Sadly, as I only use a taxi about once a year, if that, my boycott won't make the slightest difference to them.

All councils insist on medical and DBS check before issuing a private hire license. Most will require a local knowledge test also.
Oddly the London PHV license is the easiest to obtain. All you need is medical, DBS, good English and a very simple map reading test, then off you go to Brighton or wherever and pick up work from the Uber app. A PHV in Brighton requires an extensive knowledge test of the City and is not easy at all to pass. This is what has peeved the local cabbies, the law allows a PHV driver from anywhere to work in another area as long as he is booked from his area. The Uber platform allows this to be possible without breaking the law.
However, just last week Uber as a gesture of goodwill have stopped London drivers picking up outside of the London area (by stopping the drivers app). This is to appease Sadiq Khan as he considers their license renewal appeal.

and as a result London Uber taxi drivers are now bombarding Lewes District Council with applications for private hire licences so that they can work in Brighton. Thus making a mockery of Brighton City Council's stricter licencing policy. Progress? No.

Yesterday the protest through Lewes was to highlight the fact that LDC are issuing Private Hire Licenses to drivers who have no intention of working in the Lewes district in fact they will be working predominantly in Brighton causing congestion. adding to Brighton pollution problems.
A lot of these drivers are removing their Private Hire license plates from their vehicles so creating a public safety issue. LDC’s licence application is basic in comparison to the rigorous one set out by BHCC so it seems your council are using the current law to cash in at the expense of the health and safety of he Brighton residents
