Further to my post the other day about downloading and my latest Talk Talk bill I have since found out it was all a big mistake.Something wrong with the meters apparently.
Hundreds if not thousands of folk had the same problem as me and the Talk Talk members forum was clogged with folk who wanted to know why their bills had rocketed.
We will all get reimbursed when we get our next bill but as I was lied to by the customer services lady who said 'As a gesture of goodwill we are willing to give you next months line rental free...'
Lies.
I rang today to check and was told this was not the case.
On top of that when I lost my connection last week, when I rang faults I was told if I renewed my contract, which has now expired,(Thank God) I would get a better service when faults occurred.
And I can't understand a word they say as the customer service representatives are usually based abroad...
Add to that the frequent 'cold calls' asking me to renew my contract I have had over the past few months...I am now leaving Talk Talk as I am disgusted with their tactics.
I now have to find a provider who is as cheap as Talk Talk.
I pay less than £20 a month for free local calls during the day, free local, national and 0845 and 0870 in the evenings, broadband and line rental, which is pretty good isn't it.
I don't require high download facilities and am interested in what providers you use.
Anyone?
Rant over....

I use Plusnet. I don't suppose they are as cheap but their customer service is truly outstanding. You probably do get what you pay for in this area.
Our ISP at work (Nildram) were recently taken over by Opal (who I understand are Talk Talk) and within two months what had been a rock solid service became a farce. We are currently moving ISP.

Another nightbird...
I googled Plusnet reviews today after seeing their advert on the telly and I read a lot of reviews which completely slated them...
I then Googled Talk Talk reviews out of interest and they were just as bad...
I am tempted to go back to BT.At least they have British call centres...??

I used to have Talk Talk and they were useless. When I moved I changed address with them and they continued to bill me at old address. When the court letters started to arrive I rang and asked them to write and confirm I was not a customer which they did and they still continued to ask for monthly bill. During this they were ringing my new house to ask me to be a customer! They did the same to my 85 year old neighbour and even threatened her with baliffs for £12 for a bill she didnt owe. They are utter rubbish. Now with BT who seem ok.

Well I've been with Talktalk for ages. Bill never over £20 inc line rental, calls, broadband etc, never lost connection etc. Not had a reason to complain.

no they don't. they are in India and all read from a script, when you can actually understand them. They are about as much use as gloves to a man with no arms.

I'm with Bethere, and they've just introduced phone line rental for a few quid cheaper than BT with various plans for free calls. Their support is absolutely first class. Eastern European, so not British if that's absolutely essential for you, but I'd have thought the important thing is they are highly trained and really know what they're doing, rather than reading from a script. Might be a few quid more expensive than some of the really cheap options out there, but in this case I do think you get what you pay for. I'm planning to switch my BT line over as I can't stand all the sales calls I get from them despite repeatedly trying to get my number taken off their list.

If I was in Lewes I'd go with Bethere. Very fast and a good reputation... although I'd previously understood they were not cheap.
My experience with BT has been unremittingly bad and I also found their broadband very slow. Their call centres were always in India too. The bad line quality, strong Indian accent and the fact that the operaitves never varied from their from a script made them extremely frustrating to deal with.
Plusnet service is in the UK. They've been very good for me and friends of mine who also use their service, and always know what they are talking about. I think you'll probably find only bad reviews about most ISPS on the net.
Less of a night bird, more of an insomniac.

I'm also with bethere. Was getting 1.3 - 1.4 Mbits and recently it's got a bit faster 1.6 Mbits. £18.50/month just for the that though.

A little story:
I was with Tiscali and they were pretty good for me. Talk Talk took them over and the service deteriorated sharply with several instances of days with no connection. I complained and was also fed mistruths about broadband speed so was on the verge of changing.
Anyway, about 6 months ago a nice young lady from TalkTalk knocked on my door, not knowing I was already a TalkTalk customer, to offer me a Talk Talk package. After a nice little rant at her she got on the phone to her company and the next day all my troubles were sorted..... No more loss of broadband and now 4 times faster AND about £3 a month cheaper than what I was paying. Since then the service has been faultless.
My honest opinion is that NONE of them are much better than any of the others and one can drive oneself mad by keep searching for a better deal....just like with gas and electric!!

One way to get BT to do something quickly (ot stop doing it in this case) is to e-mail the Chief Executive. It has worked a treat for me a couple of times:

I use ZEN internet for broadband, and have done for 5 years. Excellent service, very rapid connection, low contention rates and when, on the rare occasions I have needed technical support, I've had the phone picked up quickly by one of the Zen team, not an outsourced call centre. I pay for 8 Mb connection, and routinely hit that (or more!)
You get what you pay for in this game.

This broadband speed lark confuses me. All these companies promise up to 20 or so Meg but they all use the same cables to my house and which is still the same distance from the exchange for all of them. So I have no chance of 20 meg. 6 is about the max whoever I'm with.
