Subway usually opens stores in service stations along trunk roads and motorways. Often next to a costa vending machine or a Krispy Kreme kabinet or a chiller full of ginsters authentic corniche pasties.
How blessed are we to have a subbies actually within our town centre?

Before long someone will do something really revolutionary. Maybe open up a shop selling candles and string or even a load of old junk from the local auctions

I genuinely don't understand why Subway is popular. I'm not being a snob about it, I love junk food like KFC, Maccy Ds etc, but Subway just tastes crap. And I can understand food being crap if it's very cheap, but Subway is actually very expensive for what it is. Bizarre.
Also, why does it say 'new store' on the front? It's not a store, it's a bloody shop. Are American brands not even bothering to translate for us any more?

What a tragedy. The first unethical fast food chain in our town has opened, taking up space an independent business could have occupied and contributing to the unhealthy lifestyles of those in our society for whom school education on eating is sadly lacking. We need an MP who will be brave enough, like Sadiq Khan, to combat the influence of fast food advertising.
Worst of all, the smells of food will waft out and constantly taunt the member of the homeless community who lives outside Boots and cannot afford the privilege of giant sandwiches.

Subway isn't expensive though. Today at the RSCH branch: 2 six inch subs fully loaded and toasted, 2 endlessly refillable cups of Pepsi and 2 packets of crisps for 6 quid. Seems reasonable to me.

I personally would love a fresh toast sub any day or a prepackaged damp sandwich from a chiller.

Firstly, Subway is a franchise, so it's being run by an individual not a chain.
Secondly, the shop space has been empty for a considerable amount of time, and no independent shop bothered to or wanted to go in there.
Thirdly, many of the local "independent" shops in town are run as tax right offs and used to claim all manner of government subsidies.
This town NEEDS recognizable chains, big brands and variety on the high street if it is to survive and thrive.
If you don't like the smell of freshly baked bread, then take your posh dosh elsewhere.

@Lad, those government subsidies are deserved - they save the places that make our town so quirky and unique.
And actually, I love the smell of real baked bread, that's why I'm glad we have artisan bakeries like Flint Owl!

Can you explain about the tax write offs and government subsidies please. I'd always assumed they were just set up by bored housewives who ran them until they got bored of running a string shop or their husband got fed up with subsidising it. I don't want my tax being spent on them.
