Why all the fuss about the burning of a seagull effigy at the recent Lewes bonfire celebrations? (The Argus, November 6).
Yes, it was a pathetic last gasp expression of defiance but we should acknowledge that things have moved on a bit.
After all it wasn't that long ago they were burning martyrs (no, not Seagulls supporters) but those whose religious beliefs were not deemed acceptable at the time.
The ringleader, Derek Carver, was of course a Brightonian.
Funny that.

I'm not interested about the Seagull Tableaux, but did find these remarks 'After all it wasn't that long ago they were burning martyrs', 'but those whose religous beliefs werre not deemed acceptable at the time', 'There ring leader was a brightonian'.
Now it is true that not all of the Lewes Martyrs were from the town, but the prick was clearly incinuating that it was the people of Lewes who were involved in the Marian persecutions. it could be that they pissed up the grammer, however it could be just another ill informed comment by a Brightonian.

I couldn't see what all the hastle was about to be honest....it neither gave a "for or against" impression to me....if anything, i thought it was slightly pro-Falmer.
I liked the bit that said....."After all it WASN'T THAT LONG AGO they were burning martyrs (no, not Seagulls supporters) but those whose religious beliefs were not deemed acceptable at the time"
LOL

True there were pro and anti elements and with the olive branch in the mouth there was an element of the need to come together and tbh people will infer what they want to from the tableaux.
I just found the letter a bit sanctimonious again esp the bit about the burning of martyrs.
