Hello Lewes Forum, we're considering a house- move to Ringmer. Has anybody already done this? We're attracted by the lovely countryside and obvious difference in house prices. The cycle route into town seems encouraging... can anyone advise on the general culture of the place? Is it good for young families? And lastly... how are the pubs? Thank you

Pubs are ok, probably a bit foodie orientated...one Greene King, one Long Man. School is good, nice green space in the middle of the village with decent playground for the kids, football club, doctors, cricket on the green in summer with a clubhouse, post office, on a bus route to Brighton, Tun Wells, E'bourne, not a bad few shops and probably one of the best Indian restaurants around.
What more could you want, go for it.

There's a reason it's a third cheaper than Lewes. Just keep to the paths and font go out after dark

I've certainly considered the same thing but just recently noticed the house prices starting to rise quite dramatically. One can only assume its down to the lack of 3 bed properties for sale in Lewes. A year ago there was a big difference in pricing but not so much now.

For some reason, many people who live in Lewes look down their middle class noses at Ringmer. My post above, with 3 thumbs down, at the moment, kind of prove that.
Ringmer is fine and to be honest, i'm beginning to detest what Lewes stands for so much that i'm considering moving out.

Given today's news about the potential closure of primary schools in Lewes, it would be wise for young families to move to Ringmer.

You can't beat the ring of mere's. If you like a nice quiet village with decent and friendly people then it's perfect and with lewes and brighton minutes away, what's the down side. More space and bigger gardens for the kids to play in! Love it!

No, stay in Lewes please. We don't need any more Down-from-Lewes DFLs. You will miss the pavements, shops and street lights and you may not like the mud - Ringmer is built on clay not chalk. The school is full, and while rising 5s are guaranteed a place, older children arriving in the village are not. You would need an extra car. Very few Ringmer people travel to work by public transport, and the 10% that do include those who drive to Lewes station via Earwig Corner queues to catch the train to London. The idea of travelling to Eastbourne or Uckfield or Tunbridge Wells by bus is a joke - never done that in my life. House prices are a bit lower, except at the bottom end of the market, and we'd like to keep it that way. So stay in Lewes please.

Hello 'not down from London'
My husband and I moved to Ringmer from Hove with 2 young children and we absolutely LOVE it!
We got fed up with living in a really busy town with our 2 tiddlers; we really wanted to move to a village in the countryside so that we could bring our children up surrounded by nature. We live in north Ringmer and it is absolutely beautiful. Wonderful views of the countryside from our house; surrounded by trees; the lovely village green is on our doorstep with a great children's play area; we are surrounded by lanes that we walk along to access the beautiful open countryside; the primary school is brilliant with an absolutely devoted headteacher and a good Ofsted report; the school setting itself is surrounded by open fields which I think is really good for the children; a small cluster of local shops for your everyday needs; NO STREET LIGHTS (we absolutely adore this - you should see the night sky from Ringmer - it is amazing); really friendly villagers; great family area; great community feel; 3 great pubs - 1) The Anchor on the green, recently refurbished, lovely open fires, 2) The Cock Inn which sells award winning food and has a lovely pub garden for the Summer, and 3) The Green Man which is really popular. Ringmer has a slower pace of live, and this is something we really craved after the hustle and bustle of living in Hove/Brighton, and we have noticed that this slower pace has had a really positive effect on our children. All this and yet it is only 25 mins up the road from Brighton and 10 mins up the road from Lewes, so accessing these towns when we want to do the stuff that towns have to offer is really easy. Regular has a good bus service. When we were looking at villages in the Sussex countryside, Ringmer was one of the best for all of the above reasons. I am sooooo happy to live here, it has given us a wonderful quality of life. It's been a tonic to the soul. (But I am a countryside lover. A town lover obviously wouldn't love it here or in any other country village).
Just one point to 'Townie': why would the middle classes of Lewes 'look down' at Ringmer? Ringmer, from what I am surrounded by, is extremely middle class itself! My neighbour in Bishop's lane is selling their house for £800,000 and another house down another lane is on for half a million......hardly what the Lewes lot would look down at, surely? Or is it that whole thing about townies thinking they're better than villagers? Don't get it.

I agree with everything you've said about it. Great village. Great place to live. Great feeling when you live here.

I would most strongly recommend moving there. My Sister moved there a couple of years ago and I have to admit to a touch of the green eyed monster (that is envy).....it's so nice there. I'd only really driven past it before, and had admired it as a nice place to live. But since my Sister and her family moved there I have seen just how lovely a village it is. So peaceful. She has the friendliest neighbours ever. She belongs to all sorts of village groups so she's always socialising with her village community. We visit her and walk straight out of her door, down a lane and immediately we are out in to the countryside. There are endless public footpaths in the village that lead into the countryside so we can enjoy beautiful walks when we visit her. Everyone we walk past says Hello with a nice friendly smile. It's such a nice way to live. It's how I want to live. So I'm thinking of moving there - from Lewes. (It's quite expensive for a nice house there though........3 times cheaper than Lewes 'It's The Money'? Have you looked at rightmove lately? It's highly desirable). So, Not from London, I say go for it. Ringmer is a lovely part of the world to live in.

Nice village but the traffic is a nightmare in the morning because those idiots at ESCC wont sort out Earwig corner.

To be fair though, the traffic at Earwig corner during morning rush hour is a matter of perspective. What I mean by that is, for people who have always lived in Ringmer or who have moved there from other quiet villages, then yes, maybe it does feel bad at morning rush hour. And I agree, it does get tailbacks in the mornings. But to me, it's a breeze when I drive to work in the mornings because even though I drive through Earwig Corner, trust me, it's nothing compared to the congestion and tailbacks in Brighton/Hove in rush hour..........crawling along the seafront road or Sackville road or Lewes Road where you're stuck in 1st or 2nd gear or not moving at all for agonising amounts of time. Earwig corner is only slow in the morning rush hour, the rest of the time it's completely clear, and even in the mornings it's still way easier than what I was used to before moving here. Besides, Earwig corner is completely removed from the residential area of the village so there isn't any traffic congestion in the village itself. If you don't need to drive through EC in the early morning then you wouldn't be affected by it at all.

Years ago moved from Lewes to Ringmer to buy a family home - you get a lot more for your money there and it's a fantastic place to bring up kids. If house prices were the same I'd prefer Lewes due to proximity to the train but there is a world of difference in prices even though it's just a couple of miles away. Not only can you park near your house, many houses have drives and garages. You'll need a car cos local transport provision stinks. The bikeway and re-opening of the lovely Anchor Inn have made a difference. The people are really friendly, lots of locals. Great butchers & lovely bakery (normal bread though not v artisan). Since Middletons closed you're restricted as to where to buy string, but plenty of places in Lewes for that.

Can everybody stop comparing Ringmer to Lewes on this website. Why do people do it? Ringmer is not Lewes. Ringmer is Ringmer. Lewes is Lewes. Ringmer is not an extension of Lewes. Ringmer is a village in its own right. People don't compares Chailey to Lewes. People don't compare Newick to Lewes. People don't compare Plumpton to Lewes. But people (well, Lewesions) do compare Ringmer to Lewes just because it is the closest of all the other villages to Lewes. Ringmer is one of the villages in the Lewes district and associates itself with those other villages. It is not to be compared to Lewes town itself. So whether you move there or not, moving there from Lewes is no more relevant than moving there from Lands End. Ringmer is a village in its own right. It is not an extension of Lewes.

Village people - good grief, what on earth are you going on about? Of course Ringmer isn't Lewes. Everyone knows that. That is precisely why people compare the two. If Ringmer was in Lewes you wouldn't compare it would you. This is also why the original poster asked "should we move from Lewes to Ringmer - they want to compare the house and lifestyle they have in Lewes with what they might have if they move to Ringmer.
