I think there should be a Co-operative Food in Lewes. This town is really quite low in convenience stores and such and I think it would be smashing to have a Co-op to pop into. Somewhere near the high street. What do you guys think?

We used to have. It's now the military autioneer's in West Street.
When Safeway (now Waitrose) opened, more than half a dozen small supermarkets across town closed at the rate of one every 6 months, together with independent fiskmongers, butchers, and greengrocers.

I remember Mac Fisheries, Dewhurst and "Porky" Priors. International (Fine Fare almost opposite the Town Hall and Liptons down the Cliffe. Tescos was where Bills is now. Trying to recall the green grocers. Lewes had a great choice then and its a shame they've gone to be replaced by Safeways, coffee shops and "trendy arty farty" shops etc. progress I suppose, welcomed by many.Still a shame IMHO.

Though in my experience Co-op food shops sell the lowest quality food at the highest prices.

What we really need is a decent general homewares shop like Wilko's. I'd even settle for a pound shop over Homebase.

That would be a travesty. Waitrose is open until 9pm and Tesco until midnight - surely that's enough?

It's about time people accepted that lifestyles and habits have changed over the past 40 years, and therefore our high streets have also changed. Fact of life, unless you want to live in a museum.
