I'm going to have a grizzle and I apologise, but the shop in Leicester Road is constantly making unintentional mistakes when giving me change.
I have learned to ask for a receipt and I have to keep going back in the shop to query my change.
A couple of weeks back it was an overcharge of £2.00.When I went back, the owner said he was sorry but he included the last persons purchase by mistake. Then I used my debit card and for some reason there was a £4 overcharge which caused problems and I had to produce my bank statement to sort it.Yesterday I bought 2 items that were advertised at 'buy 1,get 1 free.I was charged twice at the checkout. When I queried it,he said the offer finished last week. That's 3 overcharges in 2 weeks, and I go in there most days.
I know that I could go elsewhere,but I don't see why I should.
The shop has a wide range of goods and I think it is a great little shop, but of course, being the only one that ever gets overcharged,i don't need to warn you to always ask for a receipt. And I am sure it is always a genuine mistake on their part.I am always pleasant, never get iffy, but he was definately cheesed off with me last night,Rant over.

I must agree with PP that anyone who uses this shop to check their change as I have been done 4 times, twice I got my money and and twice I did not. The two times I did not get my money back, totalled eight pounds. My partner has also been caught by this, so this is not an isolated incident. Is there anybody else out there who has had the same problem

I've been short-changed a few times, but having worked in a shop I know how easy it is to do. Raj and his staff are constantly juggling so many balls in the air that they're bound to make the odd mistake.

Overall I think they are an excellent shop and really know the local market, catering for a broad spectrum of customers, which is probably why they've won awards.

I've noticed that the number of errors has gone down since the new till system was introduced, so this minor problem (99% of my purchases are fine) should disappear.

I agree EOL,Raj knows his market,is a very good shopkeeper...Have they really won awards?
But I disagree about the new till system. That is what caused my problem with the £4 overcharge, the £2 overcharge and the 2 for 1 problem yesterday....When the new till system was installed I jokingly said,'No more overcharging then Raj eh'.To which he replied 'No,this system is foolproof'.Yeah,right...
I think the new system is as bad as the old one.I was constantly overcharged for 6 months, and have had the same problems since the new tills went in.Ask for a receipt like I do,go out of the shop and check it.And go and get your money back like I do.Sorry Raj.

If you believe that this shop has a problem with customer's change, then you should contact Trading Standards.

Thanks for the advice S.Oliver.I have just reported them. While I'm at it I may as well report the shop at Wallands. The one on the right hand side.He doesn't take any notice of his special offers either. Was charged full price on a packet of half price soap powder, and overcharged 50p on a single bottle of wine. Both times I didn't realise 'til I got home and could do nothing about it.I wonder if all the shopkeepers are related? I do know that Raj Patels' family members also run the shop at Landport. Doesn't bother me anymore,I always get a receipt, and pull him up when I check it.Just don't like the thought of other folk getting done.

My pleasure.
If short changing is going on then the people concerned need to be stopped, and either given some friendly advice about managing a till, or some unfriendly advice about theft. There was a time when Bill's was rather unreliable when giving back change, or even a reciept. Tesco's often make mistakes, especially with fruit and vegetables which are wrongly identified at the till.
Whatever the explaination, it is nothing to do with being either 'black or tan' !

Well, I look forward to 'black and tan' telling us how enthusiastic he/she is on multiculturalism, and where his/her favourite asian owned shop is.
'black n tan' will, I am sure, be horrified that they did not realise the unfortunate connection between their name, and the fact that their defamatory comment 'they are robbers, just wake up to it they have done it for years' was about an asian run shop.
I look forward to the clarification from 'black n tan', as I am sure they are horribly embarrassed. The issue is very sensitive in Lewes as there is a rather nasty racist minority that we all know about, and we wouldn't want to encourage them, would we?

But if the said shops would stop overcharging(and I doubt they will) perhaps we wouldn't make predictable comments.

FA. Either you are too dumb to notice, or can't read. You make excatly the same point as S.Oliver does. Lots of shops in Lewes are not perfect. Instead of whinging on about it S.Oliver has told everyone how they can deal with the problem properly, and even points out like you have that the problem is not unique. Some idiot has made a very nasty little remark (regardless of the username), as 'black n tan'. They are either totally insensitive, strangely ignorant of who runs a shop they claim to use, or are racist. Just because the men in white pointy hats aren't hanging black people from trees in Grange gardens, doesn't mean there isn't racism in Lewes, like most of the rest of the country, as you say. Perhaps you should ask the owners of the shop what their experience is.
Doesn't it worry you, FA, that if this Asian/British family are just making honest mistakes in their small shop, but are being attacked on this website by someone calling themselves 'black n tan' then it might actually be very upsetting for them to read it. Do you know how a smear campaign works?
Guess what, like other people in Lewes, this family might have a computer, and feelings too!
Oh, and by the way the user name is just a very unfortunate coincidence. I am a Kenny Everett fan.

Black and tan has posted on here before on a totally unrelated subject. His user name was used then and how people can read that his user name is starting a "smear campaign" is totally beyond me.
I know Raj very well after doing my obligitory 2 years "time" in Ousedale...his daughter was born at the same time as mine.
This is the problem we're getting...i think it was mentioned in an earlier post that people are confusing rascist and patriotic. We get so many do-gooders just like soliver and cupid stunt who pick the tiniest bones out of every statement and then play the rascist card....it's very easy to do because there's so many things....like giving yourself a username that is a drink...that can be misinterpreted but there are a few people who will pick up on it and keep plugging the rascist one.
As for Raj having a computer and looking on here, well i doubt anything racist was ever considdered until soliver stuck his sandal wearing, politically correct beak in and suggested it
As for your user name...it's not unfortunate...it's approprate

If you look back at what was originally written, you will see how ridiculous all you 'its political correctness gone mad' folk are.
I can't find any other Black n Tan posts either, (correct me if i am wrong) and regardless of the username, the comment is malicious and defamatory to the shop owners anyway. Do you all think that is OK then?
And by the way, just because you might be so thick- skinned that you wouldn't mind a bit of racist abuse if you lived abroad, doesn't mean everyone else thinks the same thing. My guess is that Stephen Lawrence's mother, for example, might have a different point of view!
