According to news shelleys hotel is now with the administrators - Anyone know what the situation is (are they close to liquidation) or will they find a buyer? I know someone who is supposed to be getting married there in july and have paid a fair whack to them.

how does cutting down a tree mean that they should be closed down? with the associated loss in jobs in the town

There seems to be a bit of a change of pace at Shellys. There is certainly more aggressive marketing going on. A couple of weeks ago there was a restaurant deal being offered via Groupon. Not the sort of thing you could imagine happening unless there was new management. The deal was from January through March and was quite good (half price on a fancy game based menu). Obviously there is the wonder of whether its still going to be trading then...

The Company entered Administration on 17 December 2010 and continues to trade for the foreseeable future with a view to identifying a purchaser for the business and assets.
Turnover: £780,000
Staff: 24
Deadline: 11 January 2011
The Company is a four AA star Hotel located in the town of Lewes in West Sussex, which has been traded as a family business for 3.5 years.
Its main customer base is from repeat guests, functions, (Christmas & Weddings), last minute walk in bookings and weekend visitors to town particularly during the period that the Glyndebourne concert is running.
Turnover for y/e 31/03/10 is £781k and for y/e 31/03/09 is £923k.
The director has indicated that this reduction has been caused by the economic downturn and loss of corporate clients.
Losses for the financial year 2010 were £61k and for 2009 were £192k. The reason provided for the reduction in losses for 2010 was in part due to the Company only repaying the capital element of its mortgage and reduction in management wages of c.£100k.
Management accounts for the 8 month period from 01/04/10 to 30/11/10 show a current loss of c.£11k.
The Company operated in a CVA for a year until breaching the CVA terms in October 2010.

It's a pity as this is a really nice hotel. The turnover is modest for a business that size and the loss over 8 months not that bad. It sounds as if someone who is better capitalised and organised could make a go of it quite easily. Lewes is really short of accommodation especially at the upper end of the market.

I agree with Woodentop, the new owners made a bad mistake when they destroyed the best thing about the Hotel, the mature shaded garden. It just confirmed that they had no idea on how to proceed if that was the first thing they did.If they lost trade it was their own fault. its not as if there is much competition, the White Hart is a dirty hole so that just leaves the Pelham Hotel, there must be room for two Hotels in Lewes if run properly?
