Announcement made by driver of London Bound train this morning. 'Due to Southern's new braking policy which is more severe than previously, you may find stopping sharper and more excessive. For those standing please make sure you are holding on'. Surely that can't be right?

Country boy - whenever I catch a rush-hour commuter train from/to Lewes the standing passengers have been wedged-in tightly like upright sardines, so holding on wasn't necessary even under harsh braking.... :-(
Maybe its a new attmept to try to get trians runnign to time more often - spend more time travelling at full speed and then brake much harder, rather than sending so much time slowing down. Frees up more track space behind your train allowing the following trains to make up any lost time ;-)

In the USA right now rather than simply fiddling with the brakes they're adding extra track at a phenomenal rate to cope with demand and speed up journey times.
