I hear that Southern is making the Runaway bid for their lease renewal again, which is just like last time. Two years have flown by and they are back to square one with this battle. Looks like they will need our support again against the ravages of commercialization over service to the customer. It will be a shame if they are forced out.

Walked in there the other day and it all went quiet like a western saloon. I walked out again...

I'm actually very shocked about that last comment. I am in the Runaway on regular basis and I have never had a bad experience there. The staff are friendly and always happy to help. I think maybe 'shambles' this was a very rare one off time. I would never say anything bad about the Runaway 10 out of 10 proper station buffet.

I just don't see the point of the runaway, bloody expensive basic food, chilled sandwiches e.t.c to put in the microwave and it just has a dull feel to it.
Staff aren't really up to much but then again never seems that busy for them to worry about, usually why they are messing around in the back part.
I tend to get a freshly made sandwich from daisys where i have a good choice and also a decent drink. As well as the fella and his wife are great to have a conversation with.

We must keep this individual cafe going as it is.
Does Lewes want to be like other towns that is full of chains.
Costa etc. have managed to get in, do we want Lemon tree/pumpkin as well?

Alas, Fran, man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains.

I cannot understand why southern would want to get rid of this place. I think the runaway is an absolute gem. There are just a handful of places like this left in England and pretty much every station has a bloody Costa, Nero or Lemon tree. Everyone needs to get down there and sign the petition.

There is nothing wrong with the Runaway cafe. The same lady has operated it for 25 years in a most professional manner. The staff are friendly and helpful and there is a wide selection of hot and cold food and beverages. Prices are very reasonable and the whole Runaway experience is memorable. The ambience is soothing with gentle classical music wafting over the music system. Someone at Southern is expecting a back hander if they succeed in ousting the present lady but we do not want or need another Costa, Cafe Nero, Starbucks, Cafe Republic or any other private individual who thinks they can do better. We want to see the Runaway running away right into the future with the same management. As the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
