I know they have to keep the roads clear for emergency vehicles but why close the roads to residents. My husbands works shifts so has to work on 5th, he has to get up at 5am travel for 1 hour then do 12 hour shift then 1 hour travel. He cannot leave work early or change shift without given more notice why can residents not gain access to their own homes, another reason local residents dread bonfire.

As far as i know, Malling street has never been closed, so i dont see the problem. The Tunnel is open to traffic to get to Uckfield and Ringmer via Malling street.
I live on old Malling and i love bonfire.

How much notice did you need to know when Bonfire was this year?

Once a year on the 5th (occasionally the 4th before anyone mentions it) is clearly not enough notice for leave to be booked, pathetic!

'Local residents dread bonfire'... laughable.

There's always been access through the tunnel and turning right and then they generally open up as far as the roundabout by Tesco earlier in the evening. There's no issue at all with getting into Malling on Bonfire Night. The difficulty is finding somewhere to park once everyone has moved their cars from in town out to the suburbs but like Forks said, it's not like you don't have plenty of time to organise getting a day off (Or two normally, going to work on the 6th is silly).

EBM you reallly dont understand the concept that people other than you may not like the same things as you. Whilst the events of the 5th appear popular it is not the case that all residents of lewes love it. So to say it is laughable the statement made by Diana shows how blinkered your viwe of bonfire is.
It is ok if some people dont like bonfire stop being so precious about it , we wont take your toy's away!! you can still play with your friends.....

Living in Lewes and moaning about bonfire is a bit like moving to Wales and then moaning it's wet.

who's moaning? , some people dont like the roads closed so they cant get to their homes, some people live here and dont like bonfire. Should they move ? only people who love bonfire can live in lewes? I used to live in wales, lots of people didnt like the rain and they may have said so , so what?
living in lewes and moaning about bonfire is perfectly acceptable thing to do if that's how you feel. It's freedom to say and this forum is a tool to do so.
What's wrong with that ACT?

oh only if it was so simple as forgetting the most important evening of the year not only for the people that support the societies (but for the council that fill their pockets of money) i sit and wonder why that people are so ignorant of bonfire its here every year on the same night( if you have forgotten the 5th nov) its seems to be the same moaning every year and i pray for my families sake and for generations to come it will still be here. Bonfire night is not only a night that we celebrate the gunpowder plot but the fact the martyrs lost their life's believing the believes.
rant over !

like so many catholics murdered for refusing to turn away from their beliefs, it's all so f##king futile......

Yes Padster, we all know that happened, but hardly a relevant criticism of Bonfire. A bit like saying it is 'f##king futile' to remember our war dead on Rememberance Sunday because German soldiers were killed in the war as well - or do you have a problem with that too?

Dear Penguin, firstly how do you justify coming up with a wild assumption based on one sentence and why also do you feel the need to suggest i have a problem with remembering britain's war dead? i think my sentence is clear , the tit for tat killing in the name of religion is f##king futile.
When we remember on rememberance day do you not allow yourself to consider the futility of young men dying because nations go to war? If you dont then perhaps you might give it some thought this november.
Do you feel any sadness for the deaths of local sussex catholics who died because they refused to recant their faith? or dont they matter?

If that is what you actually meant Padster then of course I apologise, however I am probably not the only person to assume that you were just having another one of your anti Bonfire rants.
The reference to Rememberance day was simply to illustrate my point, however it is true that there is no great emphasis put on the deaths of German or Japanese soldiers in local rememberence services in this country. It is the names of our local citizens inscribed on the memorials around which these services are held that make them so poignant. The 17 Lewes matyrs are specifically remembered on Bonfire night in much the same way, but this is not to say that there were never any Catholic matyrs, (or even any other Protestant ones for that matter) elsewhere and at different times in our history, or that their lives didn't matter.

Rant! i think it is good that there is some voices on this forum that may have different views towards Bonfire. I have a few points of order re Bonfire and i am not going to go through them again, for fear of ranting. I have absolutely no problem in Bonfire and in principle it is right that you remember and celebrate your view of your freedom. I am willing to be offended by the anti catholic pope burning that cliffe so relish, being offended shows i feel strongly. I will continue to feel strongly about it and that is that. My status as a lewes resident or someone who enjoys lewes life or remembers our war dead should not be brought into question because i speak against certain aspects of bonfire , and to be clear by certain aspects i mean the cliffe.

I said ,that as a born and bred person from Lewes, I actually do not like Bonfire! Whilst I know that many, many people do,there are quite few of us that do not!I would not, for one moment, begrudge the enjoyment a HUGE amount of people get from bonfire, but,me,and people like me, ARE entitled to our opinions, likes etc. If it were just the one night,ie the 5th,this miserable old b could probably cope but, alas, it goes on way before and often way after! Nevertheless, enjoy, just at times, spare a thought for those with pets,or just plain nervousness themselves!!
