Well, if the Ringmer rich keep all their banknotes stuffed in their mattress, then what's a poor bank to do ?

Barclays is a rubbish bank anyway - in the forefront of almost every banking scam exposed and clearly run for the benefit of its shady top bankers rather its customers or shareholders. Doubtless a complete coincidence that the incoming chairman sacked the relatively-honest (by banking standards) CEO yesterday? Certainly shows the new chairman's priorities. The idea that customers can conveniently use the Lewes branch or Lewes Post Office instead is ludicrous - an excellent illustration of how little this crooked organisation cares for its customers. How can we best get a better, honest, bank to come to replace them in the area? Is there such a thing? Our family accounts will all be going elsewhere when the Ringmer branch closes.
Learn from the Greek experience: get your money out of dodgy banks like Barclays while there is still time.

Barclays is not a Bank I use or would use. However, it's not "dodgy" it cannot be compared to a Greek bank that's just daft.
As a bank domiciled in UK it must abide by FCA rules. It must pass regular "stress tests" which it does. This is a bank with good liquidity (no risk) each branch has to make a contribution to the Barclays retail group if it can't then is it not bad business to allow it to lose money?
It's a fact that retail branches are underused in many areas. Customers like online and telephone services now. Result is branch closures.
Don't confuse retail banks with investment banks. Now that is a whole different story, they have been "dodgy" Barclays leading the way.

Fairmeadow - Metro Bank seem quite refreshing. They're not quite big enough to come to Lewes yet. Nearest branch is in Brighton. www.metrobankonline.co.uk

I have a Barclaycard left over from the time when there was something like 1% cashback for using it. I still occasionally use it; but call in to the Ringmer branch when passing to pay it off, as I can park there. For the same reason I still have a Girobank account, which I can service at Laughton and other friendly and parkable sub Post Offices.
But with the above news I will probably return my Bcard, and explain why.
