If I thought for one moment that by returning our Bus Passes it would actually save the Country, we might actually consider it. Would it stop the Government sending billions to Europe ? and Benefits to Children in Europe whose parents live and work here ? Would it stop them designing new currency designs on our coinage on a near monthly basis (every time you get change they have a different design on ) Would it cap their expenses, maybe they already have surrendered all 'perks & benefits') Huge State Funerals ? It's Austerity, but not as we know it !!

It follows Tory logic Old Mayor - things can only get better if the Middle and Working classes give up more of their income and benefits.

Better to run a bus full rather than empty.
Takes cars off the road.
Pensioners always spend money at the end of their journey - even if it's just a cup of coffee.
Keep the bus pass!
(Think of all the travel concessions available in the cities).

Looking at the BBC's, I see there's a call for pensioners to voluntarily give up their benefits, with the assurance that there are, categorically, no plans to means-test anybody. Why on earth not?
Surely, in austere times, wouldn't it be prudent to see that benefits aren't being paid to people who don't need them? I'd have thought that's a pretty reasonable starting point for saving money.

Why not cut the wages of the people who 'run' the country? You don't see a poor politition do you? Bet they would not give up their bus passes if they had one !

How about all the MPs not claiming their expenses ?

A means test for pensioners? How many more public employees would that need to administer at our expense, compared to the saving of not paying benefits to the probably small number of pensioners who are "rich" ?
If you feel you do not deserve your heating allowance, you can easily donate it to one of the charities that help the aged.
And if you do not need a bus pass, simply do not apply for it.
Simple.

I shall probably return mine but like many I do not actually use it so it will not save money. I suspect that those like myself may return them but not those who use them regularly, why would they? People deserve some perks having worked hard all their lives.

Re Pete's comment on MP's expenses. I still don't get why they don't have an MP's hostel that they book into every time they need to stay over in London for a late vote etc. Then there would be no need for these two homes etc. Those that can should be traveling home on public transport. And all other expenses should be out of their own pocket. £65k a year is a decent enough salary for anyone to live on. Or maybe we should 'benefit cap' them at 26k a year ? I'd also like to see them clocking in and out of office. They have no accountability.

I agree. I think they should pay for their own expenses and then submit receipts in order to get reimbursed (like the rest of us if we have to spend money on travel or accommodation for work). This allowance nonsense is....nonsense.
