Am I the only one thinking of moving back to London after Southern strikes and no parking in Lewes? Renting is not cheap and house prices not a lot cheaper. Moved here 4 years ago but not sure it was the right choice. Anyone?

Lewes is an excellent place to live if you want to work in Lewes.

I too moved here from London and these strikes are causing chaos with my work but I suppose that's the way it is for the next 12 months whilst this dispute is on going. I love Lewes, it seems lost in time and a lovely community to live in. We have other friends moving up from Londin as well, all seems part of the great exodus away from the big city to the South coast. There are now estate agents in Clapham advertising houses in Brighton, Lewes and Seaford, I suppose they are addressing a target audience.

Can't believe you didn't research house prices and rents before you moved to Lewes. The South East is pricey everywhere. The debacle on Southern will end. Parking is an issue in London too. I'd think of why you moved here in the first place - if it was for cheap housing then you were misinformed. If it was for a great little market town, the good walking on the downs, the community (many creatives), Bonfire, the proximity to the coast, the safe streets, the decent schools, then you made the right choice. And to quote Ian Hislop - "Southern Rail have been utterly useless for as long as anyone remember".

I'm sorry, the community is great but the 'many creatives' are a pain in the a*rse and one of the few bad things about the town. So up themselves and largely without any talent at all, churning out the same old derivative nonsense to buy and sell from one another.

People have been working in London and living in Lewes for a long time - at least ever since 1880s when the houses on Grange Road were built and explicitly advertised to "men of business in London"
It's not the obvious choice but then again this is one of the most beautiful towns in the country, surrounded by stunning countryside and the coast, with interesting events, people and pubs, supplemented by a vibrant small city only 8 or so miles away. There really are not many places in Britain - let alone in the South East - with that combination. As far as I'm concerned, it's worth the commute (and the current problems will not last for ever).

@ Clifford, I'm sure some of the "many creatives" you describe could be a "pain in the arse", but I certainly don't think that of all of them. I'm not arty in the slightest, but consider some of them as talented, clever and decent people. Just as i'm sure not all people who voted brexit are dimwitted racists or well past their sell-by-date. At least put some sort of disclaimers and caveats if you're going to make generalisations (unless you're just being deliberately provocative and trolling - in which case, yay, go you), or you'll just get called out for stereotyping.

In a previous post you implied that all scout master's are peadophiles. Get a life.

Lewes has a much higher percentage of social housing than the national average.

What about if I had lived in Lewes for a long time, working locally, and then was offered a very good job in London (my experience)?
I am supposed to move out, upend my children's schooling and my family life generally, sell my house and move to the London 'burbs?

Clifford, I tend to agree with you about the 'creatives', some of them completely talentless (see Artwave) , but many of them, musicians, actors, writers, designers and artists contribute to the rich cultural life of the town - look at the amount of gigs and concerts we have, theatre and opera, a new cinema to open next year, festivals etc. there's an awful lot going on if that's what you like. There are some pretentious w@@@ers amongst them, but good people too.
