Well done Jack, I'll go with you, an anonymous internet poster with a chip on his shoulder and not the British Legion who support white poppies and recognise them as a mark of respect. Bet you voted for Brexit too.

Do you remember the lives of those who died or mourn the passing of the politicians and aristocrats who sent them to their deaths?
The Legion have dropped "Royal" from their name. Remembrance is a more human institution now, the role of military is downplayed and that's probably a good thing.

The Sassoon letters on the castle keep were very moving.... Remember our mundane lives of commuting etc seemed like heaven to the boys who went from school to trench to death. "remembrance therapy". It works, whenever I'm tempted to self pity and general whining I remind myself of my great uncles who never had such luxuries and whose lives were taken to serve those who saw them as tools.

White poppies present the ultimate respect to me, as they remember those who have died and strive for it not to happen again? If only the RBL got the money too

My Grandfather's brother was in first with the B.E.F in the Coldstream Guards, survived the First World War and returned to Sussex. My Grandfather missed WW2 because he had TB and survived that. My Dad missed WW2 because he was just too young, but went in the Army of Occupation after. I do remember the Fallen and think we've been Damned Lucky.

Those who loose their lives in war should be remembered but it's essential we remember that war isn't about winners, heros or patriotism. It's disgusting and I think a lot of it's been idolised by macho closet-racists getting off on old (ancient) glories.

So you don't think defeating Nazism was a good and necessary thing? I honour the soldiers who fought and the conscientious objectors who believed they should not kill.

The war was of course a terrible thing, but with time it and its effects fade into meaninglessness. Who recognises the contribution of soldiers from earlier conflicts?
What I think is a remarkable positive from the war is that it finally convinced the ruling elite they depended on the working masses for their national security, and there was a profound change in their treatment as a direct consequence. The post war years saw politicians conceding that taxes spent on social welfare were long overdue, leading to the set-up of the NHS and the entire welfare state.
Of course,. It only takes a couple of generations for our ruling elite to forget all, that – the debt is repaid and now they can start treating us like the scum we always were to them again.

RBL do not support the white poppy, we simply say on our web site we see no reason why they cannot be laid at a war memorial.. We make no comment about the lack of staying power when laid.
