When you are looking for a home it is so insulting that some people put 'would suit professional' or suitable for 'academics', its not the accommodation that is more suitable for professionals or academics, its the fact the the landlord would prefer professionals or academics. Like back in the day landlords put no blacks or Irish, now its no unskilled no uneducated, no wonder there is homeless all over the UK.

A private landlord is allowed to let a property to whichever type of person he prefers. It is entirely likely that he has found that the professional classes or those with a private income, rather than the labouring classes, pay bills on time and keep his property clean and tidy. Or it is possible that the house is simply in an area (e.g. a village without a bus service), or of a style, that is not suitable for the working class. Either way, it is not something to criticise.

There are many restrictiction under the anti-discrimination legislation that do constrain private landlords, but poverty is not one of them. In this case I interpret the wording as code for "no-one dependent on housing benefits".

@MG, there is some truth in that, but I would suspect its more snobbery the like shown by Jennifer in her post. Not sure why someone that is from the "Labouring Class" would be reliant on a bus service, or that a professional would be more honest or more reliable, its just ignorant discrimination.

Given that most of the local 'academics' seeking rented accommodation are postgraduate students with huge and escalating debts or postdoctoral researchers with very insecure and short term contracts, any preference shown to them by local landlords must be based on something other than financial security.

@Not on benefits - Jennifer is not a real person, but it's done so well that people keep falling for it. I suppose Jennifer says what a lot of a certain type of person in Lewes really thinks, but wouldn't dare to say. Like Katie Hopkins.

If you lend someone £20 and don't see them again it was probably worth it.
