I'm told that the 2 remaining contenders for the Tory party leadership are to have a TV debate. Why? The electorate for this is the 180,000 self selecting Tory party members. Why should the Tory party be given this free TV publicity for their policies when the vast majority will have no say? Given the age of the electorate, why don't the contenders just make a vhs video of their views and send it direct to the members.

I have to agree with you. Two members of the World Economic Forum competing to be it's UK representative. Don't worry no one will watch it.

Not just the WEF, but also the WWF, the EEC, the EU, the UK, and also members of the KKK.

In all seriousness, and away from kooky conspiracy theories about Klaus Schwab and other names that people like Russell Brand talk about daily to get clicks/views.....Truss and Sunak are the best two the tories could come up with?!

I didn't think you were in to Ad hominems. Basically, this forum is now reduced to you, me and nev. We know the routine. I don't think anyone cares anymore. I'm happy to take a third of the responsibility for this forums demise.

That leaves Tom two thirds responsible.

As you'd already heroically but needlessly claimed one third of the responsibility, that only left two thirds.
I see that truss is very hot favourite to become prime minister. Two years of increasing disaster then she steps down to be replaced by Johnson who gets reelected by a grateful nation in December 2024. No wonder I don't follow the news.

Come on Tom, give us some optimism about climate change. Will the globe continue to heat up, forcing mass migration to places like the UK......Siberia? Seems crazy sending them to Rwanda, will surely be hit hard by climate change now and the near future!

Rwanda? Oh yes the poster child for multiculturalism. It's, you know, their strength. If the climate tries to change there: it better watch out. The jury's out on anthropogenic forum change, I think it's probably due to the weather. Speaking of which, I don't like it. Its got nothing on 1976 but I was more resilient then, not a gardener and enjoyed it. The more it changes the more it stays the same,as the Patagonians say. Je ne regreta thunburgar.

I'm not a fan of the heat much either. Wasn't around for 1976 freak summer, but even that fell quite some way short of what was going on, on Monday and Tuesday this week. 4 or 5C more is enormous.

But yea, you coped better in 1976 because you were over years younger, and even during its peaks, was quite a bit cooler anyway. This summers not done yet either. Wonder if it will break 40C again in August....not looking forward to that.

This is a freak summer, just what holiday makers want, and hardly ever get. That's why so many of the Lewes la-di-das have a little villa in Umbria or similar. I've seen some footage from the media and mentions of spontaneous combustion- what a joke. The way they're spinning it- every where in the tropics would have been cinders since the year dot. In '76 the downs were brown, I kid you not and the TV weather men were full of glorious summer patter but I bet they're all doom and gloom about it now.

I think the downs were yellowy brown just a few years ago one summer. But 40C heat in Britains typical climate, and the infrastructure thats built around that, is more than just "glorious sunshine". We also have better understanding today than we had back in the 70s over the harms of exposure to the sun, as well as the stresses it can cause on the human body.

If we are going to have to expect more summers where days of 40C are more regular, and last longer, then we need to build better roads, houses and public transport that can cope with the extreme weather. Unfortunately for those where 40C is already not uncommon, that may become even hotter pushing even their preparedness to the limits. Let me just remind you that the difference between the peak of '76 at 36C is worlds cooler than 41C last week.

rThe difference between now and then is is that higher temperatures are being actively sought. I know you won't believe it but government establishments are extremely duplicitous, even scientific ones. I'm certain that higher temperatures were recorded somewhere in the country in 76, they just won't get any publicity. I've seen all this chicanery too many times to believe anything when there's an agenda on the go and the CO2 racket is the biggest yet. If you saw through it : all your peers would hate you if you told them. It's the same as Ukraine, a re-run of Yugoslavia with NATO throwing it's deadly weight around with depleted uranium. Internet censorship is increasing and I doubt very much if you'll have a chance of seeing through that, still you'll have nothing and you'll be happy. Or else!

You mean it's a conspiracy Tom. Interesting theory!

Yea nev, another conspiracy theory. They had fewer thermometers back then so could only pick up 36C instead of 41C this year. If only they used more thermometers the science community wouldnt be so nervous!!

It makes complete sense to me that the meteorologists back then would deliberately lie about what the temperature was so that they could invent the whole myth about climate change in the future to make it appear that it was much hotter now than then. Why is Tom the only one able to see through their diabolical plan?
As for the analogy of climate change and Yugoslavia, it makes perfect sense when he writes it down and I'm kicking myself for not having spotted it. I've probably been reading too much of the censored internet. How come Tom's the only one with an uncensored internet that allows him access to the truth? Maybe I should try PC world. Mind you, if they're so PC that might not be the place to go.

Do you agree with me that the present tory government acted honourably throughout the covid caper and the last thing on their minds was to enrich themselves and their cronies at the taxpayer's expense? Ive just heard that during the planet shrivelling weather- the solar panels didn't work! The wrong sort of sunlight was to blame. It was too hot! Is stupidity, greed and hubris a conspiracy?

To give us the pleasure of seeing two people who sat in the same Cabinet tearing each other apart and the Tory party in the process. A real pleasure we should not be denied.

I'm afraid I no longer get the pleasure from watching that kind of thing basil but hope you are enjoying it. I hope you are right about it not helping them with free publicity but fear you are not. Looks like truss is certain now according to the bookies. Hard to think she's got the qualities and I can't see her lasting long or that the endless stream of good news will encourage me to stop boycotting it.
Johnson isn't gone. He'll be back for the election.
