Just a thought, Why is it that at football matches all the blue bottles are facing the crowd, and if there are fireworks on the pitch, Its down to the ref to sort.
At Lewes Bonfire, all of the blue bottles are facing the procession, so tell me when fireworks erupt in the crowd, who sorts it ?
The Chief Blue Bottle keeps re-iterating that his comrades are at the Lewes Bonfire Night Celebrations for crowd control and safety, if that is so then turn the other way.

I'd do that - turn my back on a load of twonks behind me with flaming torches, over-loud bangers and heavy trolleys etc. Not!!!
The Police face the crowd 'cos that's where the trouble is likely to be. They're hardly going to be bottled by a goalie during teh match. So in Lewes it makes sense to face the biggest danger. At Henley they're taught drill so I'm sure they can turn around to rsolve crowd trouble in a matter of seconds.
Now go away you imbecile.

Common sense (!) - if you'd bothered to look, the police are well protected against sparks and bangs. I believe that especially the out-of-town ones just want to see the spectacle, and don't realise the real danger comes from idiots in the crowd. Hopefully this year they will be properly briefed - to face the crowds and work solidly for their shifts and overtime.

The police are actually observing the crowd on the other side of the road. Apparently they get a better view that way and can see more than if they are nose to nose with the crowd on their side. Just passing the info on!

Common Sense, I think you'll find they are trained at Hendon, They probably started in Henley, but kept falling in the river when the practised their sharp about turns!! From the beginning of your post it sounded like you didn't know what you were talking about.

There are also plain clothes officers in the crowd, quite a few actually.

plus they would be putting them self in danger by turning away, assuming a torch head were to fall off, or something of the sort

There will be a lot of Evidence Gathering Officers around along with ordinary officers who will have cameras in addition to CCTV.
